    VI: Emptiness and Fullness
    Those who are first on the battlefield and await the opponents are at ease; those who are last on the battlefield and head into battle get worn out. Therefore good warriors cause others to come to them, and do not go to others. What causes opponents to come of their own accord is the prospect of gain. What discourages opponents from coming is the prospect of harm. So when opponents are at east, it is possible to tire them. When they are well fed, it is possible to starve them. When they are at rest, it is possible to move them. Appear where they cannot go, head for where they least expect you. To travel hundreds of miles without fatigue, go over land where there are no people. To unfailingly take what you attack, attack where there is no defense. For unfailingly secure defense, defend where there is no attack. So in the case of those who are skilled in attack, their opponents do not know where to defend. In the case of those skilled in defense, their opponents do not know where to attack. Be extremely subtle, even to the point of formlessness. Be extremely mysterious, even to the point of soundlessness. Thereby you can be the director of the opponent's fate.

    Sun Tzu: The Art of Defeating Your Workplace Adversaries

    When the tone is accusatory, critical, personal, sarcastic or bitter, you know you are engulfed in an adversarial struggle,whether you want it or not. More than likely, in addition to a disagreement on issues, you have somehow, perhaps inadvertently, stepped into a land mine of ego, hyper-sensitivity, previously unearthed blunders or organizational power struggle, in which you are marked for organizational demise. Don't roll over. Fight back. Sun Tzu, of course, was the military genius who formulated timeless strategies for defeating one's enemies. Although those adversaries, who arise from time to time to confront you in the workplace, may not rise to the level of enemies, nonetheless they thwart your progress, can derail your programs, and are capable of slowing or even incinerating your career. Just like the adversaries of old, they must be defeated, vanquished, or "put in a box", a kind of "no fly zone", where they can do no further damage to your career. How Do You Know When Someone Becomes Your Adversary?

    BANGKOK - While the US-led war on Iraq may not yet have succeeded in its stated aim of "liberating" Iraq and destroying its weapons of mass destruction, it may have succeeded in breathing new life into the writings of an ancient Asian mind - the Chinese military philosopher Sun Tzu.
    This week served up the latest about the Chinese thinker and general from the 5th century BC, who wrote the oldest military treatise on war, The Art of War; using knowledge he learned from fighting during China's Age of the Warring States.
    Sun's work on war has punctuated the debate under way since it emerged that Washington's initial battle plans - given the name "shock and awe" - had not produced the desired results.
    A commentary in Monday's Asahi Shimbun, a daily newspaper in Japan, is typical of those that acknowledge there is a Chinese link in Washington's armor.

    Kung Fu International Assassin?
    An article in Kung Fu Magazine's Ezine, 'Kung Fu Secret Agent' , has recently sparked some significant controversy. It focuses on the claims made by David Bannon in his book 'Race Against Evil: The Secret Missions of the Interpol Agent Who Tracked the World's Most Sinister Criminals' that he was a part of a secret team of Interpol assassins called Archangel, targeting child pornographers.
    Bullshido.com, the web-based organisation set up with the intention of investigating claims relating to the martial arts, has launched a rather interesting investigation into Mr Bannon's claims. The investigation is being reported on in this thread on their discussion forum.

    Sun Tzu’s The Art of War
    A Hypertext Version See also, Sun Tzu a day on your website Well, I said I reserved the right to stick something unrelated to computing on this site, and here is the first example of such. Sun Tzu’s The Art of War has fascinated lots of people in the English-speaking world since it was translated, myself included. Part of the fascination is the pithy style of the prose. Unfortunately for the casual reader this pithiness is somewhat undermined by the commentary. The impact of verse 18 of the first chapter in particular is somewhat softened by the commentary telling you how pithy it is!. So I removed the commentary from a public domain copy, and then to emphasise the pithiness further I put each verse on a separate page. If you want to study , rather than merely read The Art of War you can buy a copy of this translation or the later the Griffith translation or download the public domain copy used to create this from Project Gutenberg
    Public Domain Declaration
    With most of the stuff I do I give a pretty liberal license; I look for awknowledgement in non-commercial copies and I forbid commercial use without asking me first. However since this little project is almost entirely a matter of copying the public domain Giles translation of an ancient (and hence well into the public domain) text it seems rather poor show to put even such a liberal license on it. Hence I am placing this derived hypertext version, in its entirety, into the

    Sun Tzu's Art of War Speak to me Master Sun,
    of the art of war. Listen then my son,
    and know you well,
    I that in war,
    the Way is to avoid what is strong,
    and to strike what is weak. II Know also,
    that all warfare is based on deception. Hence,
    When able to attack, we must seem unable;
    When using our forces, we must seem inactive;
    When we are near,
    the enemy must believe we are far away; When far away, we must make him believe we are near. Hold out baits to entice the enemy. Feign disorder, disunity, and crush him. If he is secure at all points, be prepared for him. If he is in superior strength, avoid and evade him. If your opponent is of choleric temper, irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant. If he is taking his ease, give him no rest. If his forces are united, separate them. Attack where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected.

    B.H. Liddell Hart's Forward [ Top
    I have a copy of Sun Tzu's The Art of War (1963) that has a forward by B.H. Liddell Hart. I have taken a few paragraphs from this and the closing line and present them here: Sun Tzu's essays on `The Art of War' form the earliest of known treatises on the subject, but have never been surpassed in comprehensiveness and depth of understanding. They might well be termed the concentrated essence of wisdom on the conduct of war. Among all the military thinkers of the past, only Clausewitz is comparable, and even he is more `dated' than Sun Tzu, and in part antiquated, although he was writing more than two thousand years later. Sun Tzu has clearer vision, more profound insight, and eternal freshness. The ill-effects of Clausewitz's teaching arose largely from his disciples' too shallow and too extreme interpretation of it overlooking his qualifying clauses, but he lent himself to such misinterpretation by expounding his theory in a way too abstract and involved for concrete minded soldiers to follow the course of his arguement, which often turned back from the direction which it seemed to be taking. Impressed but bemused, they clutched at his vivid leading phrases and missed the underlying trend of his thought - which dod not differ so much from Sun tzu's conclusions as it appeared to do on the surface.
