Search all of Sun Tzu Sun Tzu , Chinese general, circa 500 B.C. A collection of essays on the art of war is attributed to Sun Tzu. There are a growing number of translations of this Chinese classic, usually titled The Art of War
Knowledge of Sun Tzu reached Europe shortly before the French Revolution in the form of a summary translation by Father J. J. M. Amiot, a French Jesuit priest. In the various translations, Sun Tzu is sometimes referred to as Sun Wu, and Sun Tzi. The most fundamental of Sun Tzu's principles for the conduct of war is that "All warfare is based on deception". Another key Sun Tzu principle is that "The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting." Sun Tzu's ideas spread to the rest of Asia and to Japan.
The works of Sun Tzu have been widely known in the United States since the mid-1970s. Diplomat Henry Kissinger has made reference to Sun Tzu and the principles for the conduct of warfare has been the subject of serious study in U.S. military circles for many years. The Art of War as applied to business, sports, diplomacy and personal lives has been popularized in American business and management texts. Sun Tzu may be the most frequently quoted Chinese personality in the world today.

Introduction Sun Tzu (The art of War)
was written by Sun Mo in The Spring and Autumn Period (B.C. 512), which is roughly the same period as Confucius. Sun Mo's father was a senior officer in the military establishment, which helped to develop his interest in tactical warfare at an early age and lead him to become an expert in the military field. He was introduced to the emperor of Wu Kingdom by Wu Gi Xu to explain his art of war theories. Having successfully demonstrated the military strategies with the emperor's royal concubines at the emperor's request, the emperor eventually agreed to employ him as his General.
Applications of the Book The strategies in the "The Art of War" were widely followed in Japan in medieval times (15th to 16th Century), and the Japanese military classic "Book of Five Rings", written by Miyamoto Musashi, a noted samurai (1645), contained many similarities to Sun Tzu's teachings. The book has been translated into different languages such as, English, Japanese, German, French and Russian, which is highly valued in different countries especially as a reference book for various military academies around the globe.

SUN TZU C taikonauts into orbit evidence substantial Chinese technical achievement and the seriousness of the program. Those achievements, plus pronouncements about timetables, space laboratories, shuttles, space stations, lunar bases, and now Mars missions, naturally make one wonder just what the Chinese are up to. Is there a new, twenty-first-century space race brewing? If there is, who is racing, and toward what goal? Analysis and commentary have spawned several, often one-dimensional, scenarios. In the case of the former, though much of the Chinese program remains cloaked in secrecy due to both the nature of the Chinese system and the military aspects of the topic, considerable agreement exists among technical analysts concerning Chinese capabilities, now and potentially in the future. Certainly, a Chinese quest for prestige is undeniable. Chinese scientists and policy makers eagerly point out that when (not if) China launches

By Louis Rene Beres March 20, 2001
Chinese military thought likely originated with neolithic village conflicts almost five thousand years ago. But it was Sun-Tzu's THE ART OF WAR, written sometime in the fifth century BCE, that synthesized a coherent set of principles designed to produce military victory and minimize thechances of military defeat. The full corpus of this work should now be studied closely by the IDF General Staff and by others who would wish to strengthen Israel's military posture and associated order of battle. Let us begin with Sun-Tzu's principles concerning diplomacy. Political initiatives and agreements may be useful, we are instructed, but military preparations should never be neglected. The primary objective of every state should be to weaken enemy states without actually engaging in armed combat. This objective links the ideal of "complete victory" to a "strategy for planning offensives." In Chapter Four, "Military Disposition," Sun-Tzu tells his readers: "One who cannot be victorious assumes a defensive posture; one who can be victorious attacks....Those who excel at defense bury themselves away below the lowest depths of Earth. Those who excel at offense move from above the greatest heights of Heaven."

James Clavell's Translation of The Art of War
Clavell's Version: Although James Clavell did not do this translation himself (it is a version of an older translation by Giles), his name appears prominently on its cover, so we refer to it by his name. This is the book for readers who want a little more explanation about what the nineteenth-century author thought Sun Tzu meant, mixed in with the text itself. The actual text and its sentences and paragraphs have little to do with the original text. The goal of this work is to explain Sun Tzu's ideas. In most cases, this explanation was not offered by Sun Tzu himself. This stanza, for example, appears as a single group of characters in the original, but Clavell's translation starts it in the middle of one paragraph and combines several of the lines together into single paragraph. This implies that Sun Tzu meant them to be taken together, but we don't know that. This translation cannot resist expanding and explaining the master's words well beyond anything Sun Tzu actually said.

Sun Tzu and The Art of War
by Tim Hoyt
"War is a vital matter of state. It is the field on which life or death is determined and the road that leads to either survival or ruin, and must be examined with the greatest care." (Chapter 1). The Art of War represents the earliest existing codification of military and political strategy, and is probably the most widely-read work on strategy in history. (It helps, of course, that the book comes from China, which is undoubtedly the most widely-populated country in history, and which has a long literary tradition.) Sun Tzu's book is widely studied by the business and military communities today. At least seven different translations appeared in the last two decades alone, including an "official" copy of the version used by the People's Liberation Army complete with Marxist dialectic and critique (I know this because I have them on my desk. Isn't it great, being weird and obsessive?) "...the best military policy is to attack strategies; the next to attack alliances; the next to attack soldiers..."(Chapter 3) There's a reason that Diplomacy recommends an extra-long period of diplomacy before the first turn. This is the period when most, if not all, players formulate their basic strategies for the game. These strategies may or may not be formulated in cooperation with allies, but in any event they require outside assistance to have any chance of succeeding. Attacking enemy strategies still requires a strategy of your own: who is likely to be your enemy? Who do you want as an ally? How can you get them on your side? A simple method is to attack a fellow-neighbor's strategy. You don't even have to tell the truth, as long as you're persuasive. "Doug? Doug Kent? He ALWAYS attacks France when he plays Britain. He's been after me as an ally from the word go, but I just don't trust him. Germany and France are natural allies..." Denying an opponent allies at the beginning of the game is the best way of putting him in a position where you can destroy him.

38. Sun Tzu - El Arte De La Guerra - Introducción
Sun Tzu fué un general chino que vivió alrededor del siglo V antes de Cristo.
http://www.gorinkai.com/textos/suntzu1.htm

I compare this book to the "36 Strategies ", it's sheer witt, that's why Chinese are so much different than Europeans, they outsmart people rather than use sheer force, to win a battle often decide upon strategies, not the number.
"The art of war" is a book of intellengence, a book to guide you succes on every possible aspect of human life, in the last 2000 years, human have adapted it to bussiness, managing, sports, even learning.
