    Sullivan, Sir Arthur (1842 - 1900)
The name of Sir Arthur Sullivan is indissolubly wedded with that of W.S.Gilbert, with whom he wrote a succession of operettas that have remained a popular part of English national repertoire, for long the sole property of the company founded for their performance by Richard D'Oyly Carte, who later built the Savoy Theatre in London for the performance of what became the Savoy Operas. The national institution that Gilbert and Sullivan have become has drawn attention away from Sullivan's more serious work. Operettas Operettas with words by Gilbert range from Trial by Jury in 1875 to The Gondoliers in 1889, followed in 1893 by Utopia Limited and, in 1896, by the lesser known The Grand Duke. HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, Patience, with its satire on Oscar Wilde, the political satire Iolanthe, The Mikado, Ruddigore and The Yeomen of the Guard, continue to bear witness to the deft and witty music of Sullivan and the comic verbal talents of Gilbert. by David Ewen "Sullivan was as much a satirist in musical notes as Gilbert in the verbal test. Their repartees in collaboration often reminded of the sarcasms of Voltaire."
SIR ARTHUR SEYMOUR SULLIVAN , one of the greatest composers of comic opera, was born in London on May 13, 1842. His father, a bandmaster, soon discovered that his son was unusually gifted: At the age of eight, Arthur could play tolerably well on almost every instrument in the band. When, therefore, Arthur finished four years of preliminary academic study at a private school in Bayswater, he received an appointment as a member of the Chapel Royal school. He possessed a striking voice, and was frequently called upon to sing solos. More important, however, is the fact that during his three years as a chorister he composed many anthems and songs, one of which was sufficiently talented to reach publication in 1855. By 1856, Sullivan was promoted to the rank of "first boy" in the Chapel choir. He had shown such adaptability for music study that, when announcement was made that a Mendelssohn prize had been inaugurated, he was tempted to become a candidate. When the examinations were over it was discovered that, of the nineteen applicants, he was tied with one other young musician for first award-the other student being Joseph Barnby, later a wellknown conductor. A second test was inaugurated to decide between these two applicants; from this, Arthur Sullivan emerged the victor. As a result, Arthur Sullivan became a pupil at the Royal Academy of Music where his teachers included Goss and Sterndale Bennett. He remained there until the Fall of 1858. During this period, he composed an overture which was performed at one of the concerts of the Academy.

    ARTHUR SEYMOUR SULLIVAN
Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan was born in Lambeth, London, in 1842 to a very musical family. His father was a bandmaster at the Royal Military College and before age 10 Sullivan had mastered all of the wind instruments in his father's band. Sullivan composed his own anthem when he was 8 years old. At age 14 he entered, as the youngest participant, and won the competition for the first Mendelssohn Scholarship. He also won scholarships at several prominent academies and conservatories, the last of which was located in Germany where Franz List listened to Sullivan's final "thesis." Sullivan returned to England at age 20, wrote the "Tempest" and became famous. For the next ten years Sullivan was a professor of music, a teacher, and an organist. Regarded as the leading composer of the day, Sullivan had many influential friends in every circle of society including many monarchs in Europe. In addition to composing "Onward Christian Soldiers," Sullivan also composed several major choral works, including The Light of the World, The Martyr of Antioch, The Golden Legend

Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842 - 1900) was one of the leading composers of the Victorian age. He composed numerous hymns and other pieces, but is most famous for the comic operas he created with WS Gilbert Early Life Arthur Sullivan was born on May 13, 1842, the son of a bandmaster. As a result he became a pupil at the Royal Academy of Music, where he studied for two years. Early Career After leaving the Royal Academy, Sullivan enrolled at Leipzig Conservatory for further study. Under the tutelage of men such as Hauptmann and Richter he soon made rapid progress. During the period of his studies several of his compositions were performed during concerts of the institutions he attended. In particular, two of those premiered while he was at Leipzig - a string quartet and
