  • Her real name is Johanna (Anne) Sullivan Macy. She was born April 14, 1866 in Feeding Hills, Mass. Growing up Annie suffered poverty and physical abuse from her alcoholic father. She got a disease called trachoma and it left her almost blind. Two years later her mother died and her father left her and her brother in an orphanage. Shortly after that her brother died from tuberculosis. Annie is known for her teachings to Helen Keller, which gave her the ability to grasp concepts unheard of, by deaf and blind students before. Annie and Helen worked together for many causes to raise money for the American Foundation for the Blind. She died October 20, 1936 in Forest Hills, NY

    Macy, Anne Sullivan
(1866-1936), educator Born in Feeding Hills, Massachusetts, on April 14, 1866, Joanna Sullivan was known throughout her life as Anne or Annie. When she was eight her mother died, and two years later her father deserted the three children. Anne, whom an earlier illness had left nearly blind, entered the Perkins Institution for the Blind in 1880. Surgery the next year restored some sight, and she graduated from Perkins at the head of her class in 1886. In March 1887, after several months of studying the records of Samuel Gridley Howe's work with Laura Bridgman , Sullivan arrived in Tuscumbia, Alabama, to become governess to six-year-old Helen Keller , who had been left blind, deaf, and mute by an illness contracted at the age of 19 months. Keller had grown into an undisciplined, willful, and ill-tempered child with no means of contact with the outer world but touch. With patience and creativity, Sullivan within a month succeeded in teaching Keller, by means of a manual alphabet, that things had names. Her progress was rapid thereafter; Keller and Sullivan gained a national reputation as Keller mastered a full vocabulary and displayed a gifted intelligence. In 1888 the two began spending periods at the Perkins Institution, and Sullivan subsequently accompanied Keller to the Wright-Humason School in New York City, the Cambridge School for Young Ladies, and finally Radcliffe College, where Sullivan painstakingly spelled out the lectures to Keller and read to her for hours each day. After Keller's graduation in 1904 they settled on a farm given by a benefactor in Wrentham, Massachusetts.

    About Us
Vermont Stage’s ‘Miracle Worker’ finds more perspective April 30, 2004 By Jim Lowe Times Argus Arts Editor BURLINGTON – It’s difficult to know whether the emotional power of “The Miracle Worker” comes from the writing in William Gibson’s classic drama, the quality of the performance, or from its deep tale of humanity. Regardless, the wrenchingly beautiful story of the deaf and blind child, Helen Keller, and her indomitable teacher, Annie Sullivan, continues to fascinate and touch audiences everywhere. In short, it has become a classic. Vermont Stage Company’s production of “The Miracle Worker,” which opened Wednesday at the Flynn Center’s FlynnSpace, delivers all that emotional power, and adds a slightly different perspective to this well-known drama. The story is, of course, based on a true one. The orphaned Anne Sullivan (1866-1936) (called Annie in the play) was placed in an almshouse in 1876, then sent to the Perkins Institution for the Blind in 1880, after becoming nearly blind due to a childhood infection. Although a series of operations partially restored her sight, she learned the manual alphabet. After graduation, in 1887, she was chosen to teach Helen Keller (1880-1968), who was made deaf and blind at the age of 2 (in the play, it’s 6 months) by an illness. As Keller’s teacher, Sullivan pioneered a touch system of teaching where, rather than attempting to explain the properties of an object, she would allow her pupil to experience the object. Keller went on to graduate from Radcliffe with honors in 1904.
