South Land of the Holy Spirit Chapter: 10 X EXPLORERS Introduction Land exploration was incidental to settlement. It began only after the penal colony was established in Sydney in 1788, as the need for agriculture to provide food arose. As the settlers found out that the grasslands were suitable for raising cattle and sheep, a search for more pastures began. After the gold discoveries of 1851, a search for precious metals became a new motive to push beyond the limits of the pastoral lands. While all exploration has its dangers and difficulties, explorer Ernest Giles wrote: "Exploration of one thousand miles in Australia is equal to ten thousand miles in any other part of the earth's surface, always excepting Arctic and Antarctic travels". The immense size of the continent and the aridity of the interior were major problems. Water was a constant preoccupation of the explorers. For example, explorer Eyre travelled 1500 miles from Spencer Gulf to King George's Sound without finding running water once. The explorers sometimes found rainwater in hollows in rocks or clay; they rose before dawn to gather the dew, Aboriginal style; mostly they dug for water.

ROAD TRIP! - Our Trusty Vehicles
On site at Lindon Station after 3 days on (and off) the road To make our way overland through our 3500 km trek, recognizing that at times "roads" would be nonexistent, we leased two four-wheel drive camper vans from Britz. Despite some minor technical glitches: failed electrical system which kept blowing fuses, failed starter (thanks to a helpful "hot wire" from a knowing Aussie we pushed on), unfilled battery cells, broken door key stuck in lock (we became very adept at climbing into the back through a "pass through" behind the cab), just to name a few, we persevered. However, it was those same 24 Volt batteries which we removed and used to power my UMBRAPHILE camera when the 1.2 amp hour gel-cell ones the ones I had brought to OZ from the US failed - so no complaints! Joe Cali made much better time than us in his own four-wheel drive vehicle (left). We thank him for his patience.

Front Page Encyclopedias Dictionaries Almanacs ... Quotes Charles Sturt Captain Charles Sturt Australia n explorer, was born in India and joined the British Army as a young man, seeing action with the Duke of Wellington in Spain and at Waterloo . He came to Australia with his regiment in . In 1828 the Governor of New South Wales , Ralph Darling sent Sturt and Hamilton Hume to explore the area of the Macquarie River in western New South Wales. They discovered and named the Darling River , but were unable to proceed further. This expedition proved that northern New South Wales was not an inland sea, but deepened the mystery of where the western-flowing rivers of New South Wales went to. In 1829 Governor Darling approved an expedition to solve this mystery. Sturt prooposed to travel down the Murrumbidgee River , whose upper reaches had been seen by the Hume and Hovell expedition . In January Sturt's party reached the confluence of the Murrumbidgee and a much larger river, which Sturt named the Murray River . It was in fact the same river which Hume and Hovell had crossed further upstream and named the Hume. Sturt then proceeded down the Murray, until he reached the river's confluence with the Darling. Sturt had now proved that all the western-flowing rivers eventually flowed into the Murray. In February 1830, the party reached a large lake which Sturt called Lake Alexandrina. A few days later, they reached the sea. There they made the disappointing discovery that the mouth of the Murray was a maze of lagoons and sandbars, impassable to shipping. The party then faced the ordeal of rowing back up the Murray and Murrumbidgee, against the current, in the heat of an Australian summer. Their supplies ran out and when they reached the site of Narrandera in April they were unable to go any further. Sturt sent two men overland in search of supplies and they returned in time to save the party from starvation, but Sturt went blind for some months and never fully recovered his health. In

The Northern Territory is the most barren and least populated state of Australia, for many people it is the "real" Australia, for it presents two different faces: the vast, arid Red Centre, best known for the famous Uluru (Ayers Rock) and the monsoonal Top End identified by the world heritage Kakadu National Park. Northern Territory visitors are confronted with meteorite craters, eerie canyons, lost valleys of palms, hot springs, raging waterfalls and home exuberant Australian outback festivities.
