Emma Thompson dogs Jonathan Pryce in 'Carrington' By Richard von Busack A tale of hopeless love among the literati, Carrington provides Emma Thompson with a grand, Oscar-bait role as the painter Dora Carrington, who was the lifelong companion of Lytton Strachey (1880-1932), influential critic, historian and homosexual. Carrington and Strachey were all part of the Bloomsbury tangle, probably what the late, lamented Kingsley Amis was referring to in Lucky Jim when Dixon tells a woman, "I know you're all frightfully keen on marrying men you don't like." Strachey was the author of the must-read 1918 Eminent Victorians, a revisionist biography of four monumental personalities. It's a very modern read, written by someone who retainedunlike so many other moderns nowthe hope that logic would save the world. In the directorial debut effort by the writer Christopher Hampton ( Dangerous Liaisons ), Strachey makes an unlikely hero. Jonathan Pryce ( Brazil ) plays him as a frail, tweedy, vegetating critic with a huge muff of a beard. Carrington, who preferred to be addressed by her last name, is here smitten abjectly, realizing that she loves Strachey even as she tries to literally beard him in his den with a pair of scissors. (It is her way of punishing the author for his impulsively stealing a kiss.) A friend of Carrington's suitor, Mark (Rufus Sewell), Strachey is inveigled into persuading the painter to surrender her virginity to the younger man. The awful sex that results convinces Carrington to live in a chaste menage with Stracheyeven as she eventually marries and takes lovers, none of whom can touch her soul as much as the fussy critic.

Strachey, Lytton (1880-1932) The English biographer and essayist Lytton Strachey spoke openly of his homosexuality to his Bloomsbury friends, but his openly gay works were published only after his death. Giles Lytton Strachey was born in London on March 1, 1880, one of thirteen children of Richard Strachey and Jane Maria Grant. The large discrepancy in his parents' ages (thirty years) resulted in Lytton being much closer to his mother than his father. At Cambridge, he found his niche and made lasting friends, including those who would later form the nucleus of the Bloomsbury Group. It was in this milieu that Strachey wrote about and spoke openly of his homosexuality. Sponsor Message.
Two essays, not published during his lifetime, are explicitly homosexual. The first is an Arabian Nights inspired tale titled (appropriately) "An Arabian Night." It is a very light king-falls-in-love-with-shepherd-boy story (reprinted in

Biographical Sketch
Born in 1889 to Sir Hugh Barnes and Winifred Strachey Barnes, Mary (Barnes) Hutchinson spent her early childhood in India before being sent to boarding school in England. In 1910 she married a lawyer, St. John Hutchinson, and about the same time her cousin and confidante Lytton Strachey and his friend Duncan Grant introduced her to the Bloomsbury group. Initially shy in the company of this artistic group of people, Hutchinson soon entered into the spirit of Bloomsbury, becoming a generous hostess and patroness. Surrounded by writers as she was, it is perhaps not surprising that she also took to writing, publishing a single volume of short stories and essays, Fugitive Pieces , in 1927. Hutchinson also became deeply involved in the lives of her friends and, in the manner of the Bloomsbury group, maintained a long term affair with Clive Bell which was not particularly discreet. On the other hand she seems to have maintained a similarly lengthy relationship with Aldous and Marie Huxley, without, it is thought, the knowledge of her husband or Bloomsbury in general. She also provided a great deal of emotional support to T.S. and Vivienne Eliot, helping both of them through their divorce, and remaining in touch with Vivienne as her mental faculties deteriorated.

Strachey, Lytton Strachey, Lytton (Giles Lytton Strachey), , English biographer and critic, educated at Cambridge. He was one of the leading members of the Bloomsbury group . Strachey is credited with having revolutionized the art of writing biography. In reaction to the copious dull scholarship and the lengthy panegyrics of the 19th cent., he determined to write biographies that were swift, selective, critical, witty, and artistic. His work includes Eminent Victorians (1918), a volume of short biographical studies; Queen Victoria (1921), his masterpiece; Elizabeth and Essex (1928); and Portraits in Miniature (1931). As a critic, Strachey was the author of such works as Landmarks in French Literature, a study of the classical spirit (1912), and Books and Characters See biography by M. Holroyd (2 vol., 1968; rev. ed. 1995).

The history of the Victorian Age will never be written: we know too much about it. For ignorance is the first requisite of the historian - ignorance, which simplifies and clarifies, which selects and omits, with a placid perfection unattainable by the highest art.
