Harriet Beecher Stowe
STOWE, Harriet Elizabeth Beecher, born in Litchfield, Connecticut, 14 June, 1812, is the third daughter and sixth child of Reverend Dr. Lyman Beecher. When she was a mere child of four years, Mrs. Beecher died, yet she never ceased to influence the lives of her children. Mrs. Stowe writes : "Although my mother's bodily presence disappeared from our circle, I think that her memory and example had more influence in moulding her family than the living presence of many mothers." After her death, Mrs. Stowe was placed under the care of her grandmother at Guilford, Connecticut Here she listened, with untiring interest, to the ballads of Sir Walter Scott and the poems of Robert Burns The "Arabian Nights," also, was to her a dream of delightan enchanted palace, through which her imagination ran wild. After her father's second marriage, her education was continued at the Litchfield academy under the charge of Sarah Pierce and John Brace. Of Mr. Brace and his methods of instruction Mrs. Stowe ever speaks with the greatest enthusiasm. "Mr. Brace exceeded all teachers that I ever knew in the faculty of teaching composition,"

The site features excerpts from Uncle Tom's Cabin and information about Stowe's participation in the cause of the emancipation of slaves. It provides much useful and historical contextual information about the period in which Stowe wrote, as well as many interesting links to the abolitionist movement and personal narratives of slaves. A nother polemical anti-slavery novel, Dred was also based on real accounts. Because of the controversy surrounding the accuracy of Uncle Tom's Cabin 's depiction of slavery, Stowe decided to document her sources from the beginning. Rather than publishing a Key as she had for the prior work, she included appendices of citations within the original text. Dred , despite its similarity to Uncle Tom's Cabin , did not attain the earlier work's popularity. The Bible Homer Aristophanes Virgil ... NEXT

    Stowe, Harriet Beecher
American writer and abolitionist, author of Uncle Tom's Cabin (1850-1852), a forceful indictment of slavery and one of the most powerful novels of its kind in American literature. Born in Litchfield, Connecticut, Stowe was the daughter of the liberal clergyman Lyman Beecher. Her husband, the Reverend Calvin Ellis Stowe, was also an ardent opponent of slavery. Her first book, The Mayflower, or Sketches of Scenes and Characters Among the Descendants of the Pilgrims, appeared in 1843. While living in Brunswick, Maine, Stowe wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin. It was serialized in an abolitionist paper, the National Era, and issued as a book in 1852.
As a serial, the story attracted no unusual notice. The success of the book, however, was unprecedented; 500,000 copies were sold in the United States alone within five years, and it was translated into more than 20 foreign languages. It did much to crystallize militant antislavery sentiment in the North, and therefore was an important factor in precipitating the American Civil War (1861-1865). Uncle Tom's Cabin, like most of Stowe's novels, is rambling in structure, but rich in pathos and dramatic incident. It is one of the best examples of the so-called sentimental fiction that enjoyed popularity in the United States during the 1800s. Sentimental writers focused on domestic scenes, and their work evoked strong emotions. Like Stowe, many of these authors were social reformists, but they were criticized for creating overly idealized characters.

Uncle Tom's Cabin By Harriet Beecher Stowe Excerpt from Uncle Tom's Cabin Page#2 Theatrical poster for Uncle Tom’s Cabin
Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Christian reservations about the theater prevented her from ever sharing in the profits garnered from the dramatization of her best-selling novel. Theatrical companies throughout the North staged what each billed as the authentic version of Uncle Tom’s Cabin . Stage managers collectively made millions of dollars, and productions reached a peak in the 1890s, when this theater poster was printed in Erie, Pennsylvania. Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) Harriet Beecher was born June 14, 1811, the seventh child of a famous protestant preacher. Harriet worked as a teacher with her older sister Catharine: her earliest publication was a geography for children, issued under her sister's name in 1833. In 1836, Harriet married widower Calvin Stowe: they eventually had seven children. Stowe helped to support her family financially by writing for local and religious periodicals. During her life, she wrote poems, travel books, biographical sketches, and children's books, as well as adult novels. She met and corresponded with people as varied as Lady Byron, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and George Eliot. She died at the age of 85, in Hartford Connecticut. While she wrote at least ten adult novels, Harriet Beecher Stowe is predominantly known for her first
