La chronique de Bernard Frank
Tragique et air pur

I. - Des fleurs enfin !

Nero Wolfe' brings back stylish sleuth
By Frazier Moore / Associated Press (May 12, 2001)
NEW YORK "You are headstrong," mutters Nero Wolfe, "and I am magisterial. Our tolerance of one another is a recurring miracle."
Hutton discovered the books when a friend gave him a tip. In the series (which airs at 8 p.m. on Sunday), Archie remains in the employ of Wolfe, a mountainous figure with a volcanic temper who occupies a West 35th Street brownstone he refuses to leave. There, this fabulous recluse puzzles through each crime in his head, while Archie who's as good with fact-finding as he is with his mitts works the outside world of circa-1950s Manhattan. Hutton has expanded his role beyond that of playing Archie to also serving as an executive producer, occasional director and a guiding force to keep the series light on its feet. Super Nero

Stout started his literary career as a writer for the pulps, publishing romance, adventure, some borderline detective stories, but after 1938 all his fiction was in the mystery field. "His face, chronically red, deepened a shade. His broad shoulders stiffened, and the creases spreding from the corners of his gray-blue eyes showed more as the eyelids tightened. Then, deciding I was playing for a burt, he controlled it. "Do you know," he asked, "whose opinion of you I would like to have? Darwin's. Where were you while evolution was going on?" (Inspector Crames of Goodwin in Murder by the Book Rex Stout war born in Noblesville, Indiana, as the son of John Wallace Stout and Lucetta Elizabeth Todhunter, who were Quakers. He was educated at Topeka High School, Kansas and at University of Kansas, Lawrence. From 1906 to 1908 he served in the United States Navy as a Yeoman on President Theodore Roosevelt's yacht. He worked as an office boy, store clerk, bookkeeper, and hotel manager (1916-1927). Stout invented the banking system for school children that was installed in 400 cities throughout the USA. In 1916 he married Fay Kennedy of Topeka, Kansas. They separated in 1933 and Stout married in 1933 Pola Hoffman of Vienna.

  • Wolfe on TV:
  • Wolfe and Literature: I created this page because I love Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe books I love the character, and his vocabulary, wit, and arrogant intelligence. My goal was to amass a list of my favorite quotations from the series and then I thought I would create an annotated bibliography, to ensure that I wouldn't accidentally buy the same book under a different title, or miss out on any. Sure enough, I discovered, to my mingled chagrin and glee, that there were still a couple of Wolfe books out there that I hadn't read ... However, as I write this second paragraph, in September of 1998, I have finally completed the collection: I found
