Bram Stoker
Stoker, Bram, full name ABRAHAM STOKER (1847-1912), British writer, born in Dublin, Ireland, and educated at the University of Dublin. After ten years as a civil servant and a literary and dramatic critic, he left Ireland in 1876 to become secretary and business manager for English actor Sir Henry Irving, joining him in the management of the Lyceum Theatre, London. He remained associated with Irving until the actor's death in 1905. Stoker wrote many books, including Personal Reminiscences of Henry Irving (1906). His classic novel of horror, Dracula (1897), introduced the character of the vampire Count Dracula of Transylvania. Dracula has inspired numerous films, sequels, and retellings. As who should say, 'I am Sir Oracle, And when I ope my lips, let no dog bark.' William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice [Gratiano] We thought her dying whilst she slept, And sleeping when she died. Thomas Hood, The Death Bed Since Wilkie Collins left us we have had no tale of mystery so liberal in matter and so closely woven. The Bookman, August 1897 ... her breast heaved softly ... And then insensibly there came the strange change which I had noticed in the night ... the mouth opened, and the pale gums, drawn back, made the teeth look longer and sharper than ever ... and said in a soft voluptuous voice, such as I had never heard from her lips: 'Arthur! Oh, my love, I am so glad you have come! Kiss me!' Bram Stoker, Dracula He was deadly pale, just like a waxen image, and the red eyes glared with the horrible vindictive look which I knew too well ... Bram Stoker, Dracula Lower and lower went her head as the lips went below the range of my mouth and chin and seemed about to fasten on my throat ... I could feel the soft, shivering touch of the lips on the supersensitive skin of my throat, and the hard dents of two sharp teeth, just touching and pausing there. I closed my eyes in a languorous ecstasy and waited - waited with a beating heart. Bram Stoker, Dracula

  • A Bio-bibliographical note about Bram Stoker
"Born in Dublin in November 1847, Bram Stoker was the third of seven children. When he was sixteen he started at Trinity College Dublin, where, overcoming previous disabilities, he became the University athletics champion. While at University he developed a great passion for the theatre after witnessing a performance by the actor Henry Irving. "Stoker followed in his father's footsteps and became a clerk in the Civil Service in 1870 but his interest in the arts continued to grow and the following year he wrote the first of his many theatre reviews. In 1878 his strong admiration for Henry Irving led the actor to appoint him business manager at London's Lyceum Theatre. In the same year Stoker married the twenty-year old Florence Balcombe. "Although Stoker wrote a number of short stories which appeared in magazines his reputation as an author stands almost wholly on his novel

    Koostas: Erik Salm Bram Stoker
Ta kirjutas lastele kummaliste lugude raamatu ,,Päikeseloojangu all’’.

    ABRAHAM STOKER

Count Dracula, the evil bloodsucking vampire, was the creation of Bram (Abraham)Stoker (1847-1912), an Irishman whose literary talents were little recognised
    http://www.ifb.net/webit/cruden.htm
    Around Cruden Bay
    Cruden Bay
Prior to the 19th century Cruden Bay existed only as Ward of Cruden, a tiny fishing hamlet perched under the shadow of Slains Castle. Between 1875 and 1880 the Earl of Eroll, the owner of the castle, built a harbour and, to mark this, Ward of Cruden was renamed Port Eroll. The harbour, however, failed to attract the herring industry to the extent expected as it was tidal and virtually dry at low water. Consequently it was used almost exclusively by small boats catching white fish and shell fish. In August 1897 the Great North of Scotland Railway opened a branch line from Ellon to Boddam which passed alongside Cruden Bay. The company saw potential for developing Cruden Bay as a luxurious holiday resort and built a huge, 55 bedroomed hotel with its own tennis courts, croquet lawns, and bowling green. A championship standard golf course was also opened and an electric tramway, half a mile in length, was built to transport guests to the hotel from the railway station. The Cruden Bay Hotel, as it was named, was the ultimate in luxury but, although profitable in its early years, it soon began operating at huge losses. Its isolated position was heightened when the railway closed in 1932 and, after being requisitioned by the army during the Second World War it was closed and demolished between 1947 and 1952. Today no sign of it remains but it was perhaps instrumental in the renaming of neighbouring Port Eroll to Cruden Bay in 1924 and it certainly encouraged the development of other visitor facilities in the town. Cruden Bay is now a popular resort town whose two miles of sandy beach attracts day-trippers and holidaymakers alike. The golf course continues to flourish and has been recognised as one of the Top 40 courses in Britain.
