Young Bram had always dreamed of becoming a writer, but his father had safer plans. Yielding to the father's wishes, Bram followed him into a career as a civil servant in Dublin Castle. During his eight-year stint in the civil service, Stoker continued to write stories, the first of which, a dream fantasy entitled "The Crystal Cup" (1872), was published by The London Society. A serialized four-part horror piece, entitled "The Chain of Destiny" followed three years later in the

Abraham "Bram" Stoker was born near Dublin on November 8, 1847, the third of seven children. An unidentified illness kept him virtually bedridden until age seven. Was the ailment of physical or psychological origin? Was it responsible for Stoker's periodic lapses into morbidity? As with so much of Stoker's life, the truth of this matter remains shrouded in mystery. Although he remained shy and bookish, in his adolescence Bram Stoker was anything but sickly. Perhaps to make amends for his earlier frailty, he was by this time developing into a fine athlete. At Trinity College, Dublin, he would conquer his shyness and be named University Athlete for his skill in soccer and the marathon walking event. And so he was not the frail figure we might have imagined, but a robust and genial young man, outgoing, bearded, and deft in debate, who graduated Trinity with honors in mathematics and turned his attention to the task of making a living. Young Bram had always dreamed of becoming a writer, but his father had safer plans. Yielding to the elder's wishes, he followed his father into a career as a civil servant in Dublin Castle. While climbing the civil service ladder, he wrote a dry tome entitled Duties of Clerks of Petty Sessions in Ireland. This book of rules, however, would not be published until 1879, by which time Stoker would be married, living in another country, and immersed in a new career.

Biography of Bram Stoker (1847-1912)
Writer of one of the world's most famous horror novels, Abraham Stoker was born to the loosely defined socio-cultural group known as the Anglo-Irish. A Protestant Dubliner, he was the son of a civil servant, and he was expected to follow in his father's footsteps. As a child, Abraham Stoker was a sickly child often on the point of death‹by his own account, he never stood upright without aid until he was seven years old. But he grew into a physically robust youth, excelling in athletics during his college years. At Trinity College, he studied mathematics and became president of the Philosophical Society and the Historical Society. The many years with Henry Irving were full of hard work and sacrifice, as Stoker frequently put his work before his family. His only child, Noel, was born in 1879. Noel later felt that Stoker's work for Irving wore out the devoted younger man. There was constant touring and promotional work to be done, throughout the British Isles and as far away as North America. It was during these years that Stoker wrote his greatest novel, Dracula (1897). In 1905, Irving collapsed and died while on tour in Sheffield. Stoker was so profoundly affected by the death of his friend and hero that he suffered a stroke. After Irving's death, Stoker continued to write fiction and do newspaper work until his own death in 1912.

Introduction History Battle of Clontarf Famous Residents ... Links Bram Stoker, author of the world's best selling novel "Dracula"was born in Clontarf, Dublin in November 1847.After a sickly childhood he completed a degree course at Trinity College and then followed his father's footsteps into the civil service at Dublin Castle. However, his real interest lay in drama and he wrote a drama column for the Dublin Daily Mail newspaper in the 1870's.This work greatly contributed to the nurturing of the dramatic scene in Dublin and helped to pave the way for the founding of the National Theatre later. In 1878 Stoker married Florence Balcombe - who had been courted by Oscar Wilde - and moved to England where he became secretary to his great acting idol Henry Irving and manger of Irving's Lyceum Theatre in London. Stoker remained with Irving until the actor's death in 1905 and under his direction Henry became the first actor to be knighted. Bram Stoker's world famous masterpiece of Gothic Horror,"Dracula", was first published in1897 and has never been out of print since. The only book to outsell it is the Bible! "Dracula" has had a huge effect on the world of the theatre and the cinema, art and the performing arts in general. It has been the source of inspiration for countless books, films and plays as well as Ireland's first Gothic Art Exhibition which opened at Dublin Castle in January 1999. There have been many and varied theories forwarded over many years as to what inspired Stoker to write this spine chilling horror story which has endured so well.

After graduation, he became a civil servant, a job that he combined in 1871 with a position of dramatic critic at the Evening Mail.
