Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh where his father was a lighthouse engineer. He was educated at private schools and at Edinburgh Academy before going on to study engineering at Edinburgh University with the original intention of following his father's profession. He gave this up, however, in favour of law and was admitted advocate in 1875 but never practised. His life was dogged by tuberculosis and he travelled abroad frequently in search of health cures, recording his experiences in books such as Inland Voyage and Travels with Donkey in the Cevennes . In 1880 he married an American woman, Fanny Osborne, for whose young son he reputedly wrote one of his most famous novels, Treasure Island . In 1888 he moved to Samoa where he lived in good health for a time and wrote vigorously in defense of Polynesian culture against European exploitation. He died of a brain haemorrhage in 1894. Although best known as a novelist and travel writer, Stevenson wrote some powerful and beautiful poetry, collected in A Child's Garden of Verses Underwoods Ballads (1890), and

Robert Louis Stevenson:
"Tusitala" 1850-1894
By Barbara Smith Parents should know their children's friends - including favorite authors. Robert Louis Stevenson is one literary companion we may think we know because his books, Treasure Island Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Kidnaped The Black Arrow , or The Master of Ballantrae , introduced many of us to thrilling romance adventures. He was a matchless imaginative writer, and A Child's Garden of Verses lead many of us to love poetry, and we enjoy introducing our children to the engaging verses that capture a child's opinion of the world. He was a versatile writer in fiction, essay, poetry and drama, believing that romance was a necessary element in life, and that fiction was as necessary to grown people as play to children. For Stevenson, the highest point of romance to him was fine conduct, springing from loyalty and a sense of duty. ( British Poetry and Prose: A Book of Readings The literary world affectionately remembers Robert Louis Stevenson as a man who never grew up, and his verses reveal a child's attitudes. He wrote sympathetically in A Child's Garden of Verses in 1885: "When I am grown to man's estate
I shall be very proud and great
And tell the other girls and boys Not to meddle with my toys."

Stevenson, Robert Louis Biography
Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) Scottish essayist, poet, and author of fiction and travel books, known especially for his novels of adventure. Stevenson's characters often prefer unknown hazards to everyday life of the Victorian society. His most famous study of the abysmal depths of personality is THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1886). Many of Stevenson's stories are set in colorful locations, they have also horror and supernatural elements. Arguing against realism, Stevenson underlined the "nameless longings of the reader", the desire for experience. "But we are so fond of life that we have no leisure to entertain the terror of death. It is a honeymoon with us all through, and none of the longest. Small blame to us if we give our whole hearts to this glowing bride of ours, to the appetities, to honour, to the hungry curiosity of the mind, to the pleasure of the eyes in nature, and the pride of our own nimble bodies." (from 'Aes Triplex') The Edinburgh University Magazine (1871) and The Portofolio In a attempt to improve his health, Stevenson travelled on the Continent and in the Scottish Highland. However, traveling on boats was not always easy for him. In letter, written on his journey across the Atlantic in 1879, he complained: "I have a strange, rather horrible, sense of the sea before me, and can see no further into future. I can say honestly I have at this moment neither a regret, a hope, a fear or an inclination; except a mild one for a bottle of good wine which I resist". Later Stevenson spent much time in warmer countries. These experiences provided much material for his writings.
