Founded in 1969 by Norman H. and Charlotte Strouse, the museum has a wide-ranging collection including letters (7 volumes of Fanny’s letters), manuscripts (including Lloyd Osbourne’s Casco diary; 38 poems and verse fragments, and essays, notebooks and notebook pages), first editions, paintings, sculptures, photographs, and memorabilia (including S’s lead soldiers. Some of Stevenson’s childhood letters; his marriage license, the last words he ever penned; a page from Jekyll and Hyde ; manuscript notes on The Master of Ballantrae ; chapter 1 of Travels with a Donkey ; and over a hundred books from his library in Samoa. The galley proofs of Colvin’s 1899 edition of the Letters. Stevenson’s lead soldiers, the desk at which he worked, and his wedding ring are among the memorabilia. Photocopies of the Monterey Scrapbooks.
