    Ignatius Sancho's Friends and Family
On this page I aim to provide a little information about Ignatius Sancho's friends, family and acquaintances. The idea is not to replace more detailed biographies elsewhere, but just to briefly indicate who a particular person was, how they knew Sancho and what they were famous for, if anything. I do not intend to provide more than a paragraph for any person. If there is a particularly good website with more information about that person I have provided a link. Where there are several websites I have linked only to my favourite. I have produced three lists of names. The first is Sancho's circle : people whom we think were personally known to Sancho, but with whom, as far as we know, he did not correspond. The second list is of his known correspondents . The third, and shortest, list is of Sancho's family . Scroll down to see the whole list, or click on the above links to jump directly to those categories. My principal sources are:
    • The Dictionary of National Biography
    • Letters of the Late Ignatius Sancho: An African , ed. Vincent Carretta (London and New York: Penguin, 1998)

    http://www.lairdwilcox.com/belief/belief16.html
[For the paranoid] a subjective world can be constructed in which facts, accurately enough perceived in themselves, are endowed with a special interpretive significance in place of their actual significance..... Thus, the subject matter of his interest has to do with hidden motives, underlying purposes, special meanings, and the like. He does not necessarily disagree with a normal person about the existence of any given fact; he disagrees only about its significance. DAVID SHAPIRO, Neurotic Styles, 1965. What a man believes may be ascertained, not from his creed, but from the assumptions on which habitually acts. GEORGE BERNARD SHAW (1856-1950), Man and Superman, 1903. Heretics were most often bitterly persecuted for the their least deviation from accepted belief. It was precisely their obstinacy about trifles that irritated the righteous to madness. LEO SHESTOV, All Things Are Possible, 1905. A hard political ideology is "comprehensive" in that it offers a self-sufficient worldview able to explain in terms of an integrated set of axioms why virtually any significant social or historical event occurs as it does. "Fundamentalist" religions frequently offer equivalent perspectives, which may be why communism is so often referred to as a secular religion. TONY SMITH, Thinking Like A Communist, 1987. During the great terror, the men who spilt most blood were precisely those who had the greatest desire to let their equals enjoy the golden age they had dreamt of, and who had the most sympathy with human wretchedness: optimists, idealists, and sensitive men, the greater desire they had for universal happiness the more inexorable they showed themselves. GEORGES SOREL, Reflections On Violence, 1910.

Principles and Practice of Medicine (click the "back" button on your browser to come back to this page) (Regarding hemoptysis...) "In profuse haemoptysis, such as comes from erosion of an artery or the rupture of an aneurism, a fatal result is common, and yet post-mortem evidence shows that thrombosis may occur with healing in a rupture of considerable size. The fainting induced by the loss of blood is probably the most efficient means of promoting thrombosis, and it was on this principle that formerly patients were bled from the arm, or from both arms, as in the case of Laurence Sterne... Briefly, then, we may say that cases of haemorrhage from rupture of aneurism or erosion of a blood-vessel usually prove fatal. The fainting induced by the loss of blood is beneficial, and, if the patient can be kept alive for twenty-four hours, a thrombus of sufficient strength to prevent further bleeding may form."
    Notes:
  • "Sterne (1713-1768), the author of Tristam Shandy, an Osler favorite, described this episode in a letter written in Toulouse to his life-long friend Hall-Stevenson: 'It happened in the night and I bled the bed full, and finding in the morning I was likely to bleed to death, I sent immediately for a surgeon to bleed me in both arms - this saved me…' " (Tigertt, W.D. Annotated answers to the 1902 examination on Osler's Principles and Practice of Medicine. Annals of Internal Medicine 79:460-472, 1973.)

    Storytelling and language
    Language is an oral phenomenon.
Walter Ong, The Orality of Language, page 6. In all the wonderful worlds that writing opens, the spoken word still resides and lives. Written texts all have to related somehow, directly or indirectly to the world of sound, the natural habitat of language, to yield their meanings. "Reading a text" means converting it to sound, aloud or in the imagination, syllable-by-syllable in slow reading or sketchily in the rapid reading common to high technology cultures.

(The New) Age Of Johnson Sub-Class Laurence Sterne (1713-1768) published The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman in nine volumes between 1759 and 1766. The work itself is a sort of a biography told by the character of Tristram Shandy. The works reads like a long conversation between Tristram Shandy and the reader. The constant digressions and changes in pace, make for the work to seem more spoken than written. It seems as though Sterne was less concerned with the plot of the piece and more concerned with it's style. Sterne's flowing narrative is richly elaborate but slow paced. On the first page of the first volume Tristram discusses his birth, but it is not until the fourth volume that it begins to occur. By the sixth volume, Tristram is free of his mother's womb. Tristram's narrative is less concerned with the events of his own life and more focused on the people and circumstances that surround him. In the first volume, Tristram informs the reader about his birthday. On the fifth day of November, 1718
