Laurence Sterne
English humorist, was the son of Roger Sterne, an English officer, and great-grandson of an archbishop of York. Nearly all our information about the first forty-six years of his life before he became famous as the author of Tristram Shandy
Sutton was Sterne's residence for twenty uneventful years. He kept up an intimacy which had begun at Cambridge with John Hall-Stevenson (1718 - 1785), a witty and accomplished epicurean, owner of Skelton Hall ("Crazy Castle") in the Cleveland district of Yorkshire. Skelton Hall is nearly 40 m. from Sutton, but Sterne, in spite of his double duties, seems to have been a frequent visitor there, and to have found in his not too strait-laced friend a highly congenial companion. Sterne is said to have never formally become a member of the circle of gay squires and clerics at Skelton known as the "Demoniacks"; but no doubt he shared their festivities. Stevenson's various occasional sallies in verse and prose - his Fables for Grown Gentlemen (1761 - 1770), his

Connection Paper Assignment
Write a Òconnection paperÓ on any of our four main texts in which you make an argument based on primary source material that you find in the Harry Ransom Center. Often in literary studies, texts seem to come to us in a vacuum, and we forget that the now-famous authors we read in this class were once struggling with drafts and ideas just as you and I do. The purpose of this assignment is to get you to roll up your sleeves and dive into the world of primary research. It will help you breathe more life back into these texts by getting a thicker sense of the context in which they were written. You will then write a short, 2-3 page argument explaining how what you found enhances, expands upon, or even changes your reading of the text itself. ItÕs really that simple! The paper is due Wednesday, March 24. It Pays Not to Mind Your Own BusinessÉ This should be a fun assignment. Think of it as your chance to play literary detective or archaeologist. Although there are many ways to approach this assignment, you might begin by developing a greater sense of your author , the historical context , or the editions of the text itself.

Sterne Laurence
Sterne Laurence (1713-1768), pisarz angielski, prekursor tzw. antypowie¶ci ( nou-veau roman ); absolwent Cambridge, jeszcze w czasie studiów przyj±³ ¶wiêcenia duchownego anglikañskiego, po czym 20 lat spêdzi³ jako wiejski proboszcz w hrabstwie Yorkshire. Ceni±cy rozkosze ¿ycia, w wolnych chwilach oddawa³ siê lekturze, muzyce, malarstwu, polowaniom i romansom (czym doprowadzi³ do ob³êdu swoj± ¿onê). Po opublikowaniu pierwszych rozdzia³ów Tristrama Shandy otworzy³y siê przed pisarzem londyñskie salony i szansa kariery, jednak z³y stan zdrowia kaza³ Sternowi przenie¶æ siê do Tuluzy, gdzie kontynuowa³ pisanie. Shandy Hall
Located in the picturesque little village of Coxwold, Yorkshire, "Shandy Hall" (as Sterne called it in honor of his famous novel) is where he moved in 1760 and in the next seven years wrote the last seven volumes of Tristram Shandy . Locals testify that the site attracts many literary tourists, mostly American and Japanese. "Originally a fifteenth-century timber house of a type built by prosperous yeomen, it had probably been the house of a reeve to the abbots of Newburgh . It had undergone extensive changes in the seventeenth century: a floor had been inserted, dividing the open hall horizontally into a ground and upper storey, each partitioned into rooms and passageways. Chambers had been finished, gables cut in the roof, and a brick veneer laid over the timber walls. Sterne, with the help of Lord Fauconberg, would eventually make other changesadding the boxlike extension to the west, refurbishing bedrooms, building a stable, coachhouse, and garden summerhouse. The end product of these alterations was a charming but odd house, its formal west end contrasting with the east end, dominated by a huge medieval chimney . . ." (from Laurence Sterne: The Later Years , Arthur H. Cash, 1986)
