More options on the Contributions page. T H A N K S ! Ladies and gentlemen, after two, full, glorious, eccentric years, it's time for me to lay aside my Schism Matrix microphone. If you do still want more, dear audience, there will be more, within another venue. Eileen Gunn will be turning out the Schism Matrix stage-lights here while I clamber into the comedian tour bus. I'm off to create a new, as-yet-untitled weblog for WIRED magazine. They are expanding a blogosphere from their online presence, and they have asked me, a WIRED Contributing Editor, to pitch in and help them. And so I will. For lo, they are my people at WIRED. I was present at the days of creation for The Infinite Matrix, but I was the cover-boy for WIRED's very first issue, way back in those legendary, romantic days of the cyberPleistocene. WIRED sent me into Moscow, into Turkish Cyprus, into subterranean cyclotrons, the Eiffel Tower and Fort Knox. God help me, I have never been able to tell those characters "No." At the moment, I'm still learning how the html code works over there. I reckon this is likely to be kind of a San Francisco crowd, you know, with higher bandwidth and more Hollywood-style, actor-for-governor, dancing-baloney. We'll just have to check that out and see for ourselves, won't we?

Thanks for showing up at the exciting premiere of my brand new weblog, Schism Matrix . I would like to take this opportunity to explain what it is that I think I'm doing here. First of all, a word to the many eager web designers in the audience. Unlike many webloggers, I am not a web designer. I write novels for a living and I am strictly a verbal, textual, words-in-a-row kind of guy. Never in my life have I created even a single line of HTML code. I do not plan to start, either. So do not send me any helpful email explaining to me how with a few nifty Java extensions I can introduce some primo dancing baloney into my blog. I totally get the point there, but I'm not designing this thing and that is not my lookout. Besides, check this out:
You see those people with the cameras? That is an entire crowd of America's most prominent webloggers crammed into my bathroom . That's like Megnut from Pyra, and that harrumph personage , and several equally prominent blog g o d s and goddesses . If those people cannot change me, you cannot change me.

Michael Bruce Sterling was born in Brownsville, Texas on April 14th, 1954. When he was six months old, his parents moved to Austin where his father received a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas. After his father's graduation the family moved to Galveston, where Bruce spent his formative years. He began writing at the age of twelve in what he would later describe as "a frank bid for attention". When he was fifteen, his family moved to India, where his father worked on a fertilizer plant project. He spent two and a half years traveling extensively overseas, and then returned to Austin to attend classes at the University of Texas. There Bruce became involved with a group of other science fiction fans and writers who called themselves the Turkey City Writer's Workshop , and with their encouragement began writing science fiction more seriously. In 1976, he graduated with a degree in journalism and sold his first science fiction story, Man-Made Self . A year later, Harlan Ellison published his first novel

34. An Analysis Of MMOG Subscription Growth
Ongoing research by Bruce Sterling Woodcock.
http://pw1.netcom.com/~sirbruce/Subscriptions.html
An Analysis of MMOG Subscription Growth – Version 8.0 VERSION HISTORY – 08/2002 – Initial chart released showing The Realm, Ultima Online, EverQuest, Dark Age of Camelot, and Asheron’s Call. – 09/2002 – Revised numbers; added expansion pack indicators; added Motor City Online and Final Fantasy XI. – 12/2002 – Internal version (unreleased); revised numbers; added Anarchy Online and WWII Online. I’ve also removed the expansion pack indicators (the chart was becoming too crowded). – 04/2003 – Revised numbers; added Mankind. By popular demand, the expansion pack indicators are back (but less intrusive this time). – 07/2003 – Revised numbers; added Ragnarok Online (Japan only), EverQuest: OA, Shadowbane, Eve Online, PlanetSide, and Star Wars Galaxies. – 08/2003 – Revised numbers; minor cosmetic changes. – 03/2004 – Revised numbers; added Horizons and reworked Mankind. INTRODUCTION The initial inspiration for my research was an article by Bucky Carooe about the changing subscription base of Ultima Online. I decided it would be interesting to do some further research and chart the trend in active subscriptions for the “Big Four” - Ultima Online, EverQuest, Asheron's Call, and Dark Age of Camelot.

Charms and amulets I am an antique collector by nature and four generations of family tradition fascinated by unusual artifacts and their historical and cultural origins. While researching tribal art in Southeast Asia 10 years ago, I became similarly captivated by the intense artistry and skill involved in creating unique beads I first began acquiring ancient glass beads used as currency during the 10 12th century Majapahit Dynasty in Java. Since then, I have steadily expanded with acquisitions from Asia, Europe, Africa, America and other parts of the world so that today we offer an outstanding collection of ancient to contemporary beads for all enthusiasts, including designers, collectors and others with specialized interests.

A Contrarian View of Open Source
by Bruce Sterling Editor's Note: At the recent O'Reilly Open Source Convention , writer Bruce Sterling held court in a conference room far too small to hold all of the people who wanted to hear him. Below is the text of this talk, which was presented on July 26, 2002. Bruce Sterling : Thanks for showing up to see the obligatory novelist at this gig. It's very touching of you to take the trouble to watch me get some emotional issues off my chest. You know, I don't write code. I don't think I'm ever going to write any code. It just amazes me how often people who know absolutely nothing about code want to tell software people their business. "Why don't they just," that's the standard phraseology. "Why don't they just" code up something-or-other. Whenever I hear that, frankly, I just want to slap the living shit out of those people. That's like people whose fingers are covered with diamonds complaining about the easy lives of diamond miners.

    http://www.sff.net/people/gunn/dd/
Dr. Gunn's Organic History Supplement for The Difference Engine , a novel by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling. May also be administered as Dr. Gunn's Patented History Restorer.
The Dictionary may be consumed straight-up as an aperitif or Difference Engine appetizer.
It may also be taken as needed while reading The Difference Engine , as a History Supplement. You can choose from the list of entries in the index , or you can browse from A to Z, using the Browse link at the bottom of each page.
After you've finished reading The Difference Engine , administer the remaining portion of the Dictionary as Dr. Gunn's Miraculous History Restorer.
The Difference Engine is a sophisticated box of games and puzzles devised by benevolent tricksters Gibson and Sterling, a novel that generously rewards the reader interested enough to read beyond it. This Dictionary will not spoil your fun by revealing its surprises.
