(1949-) US singer/songwriter.
Born in Freehold New Jersey to secretary and bus driver. Discipline problem and lack of motivation at school. Started visiting Greenwich Village, New York and formed 'Steel Mill' band. Later 'Dr Zoom and the Sonic Boom'. First album 'Greetings from Ashbury Park' (1973) hailed him as the new Bob Dylan . 'Born to Run' album (1975) est'd his position as powerful writer backed by E Street Band. Legal wrangles delayed next album but still played to sell-out concerts. 'Darkness on the Edge of Town' (1978) and 'By The River' (1980) had moved from the adolescent "last chance power drive" of 'Born to Run' to drown in a predetermined Working-Class life of "union card and wedding band". 'Nebraska' album (1982) barefacts recorded in his living room, from the murderer whose 'Highway Patrolman' brother had kept letting him off earlier petty crimes, to poor kids secretly listening to rich folks partying in 'Mansion on the Hill'. 1984 saw 'Born in the USA' which some critics said wasn't going anywhere. Others said that summed up USA. Hit with 'Dancing in the Dark' about blind faith. Yet president Reagan highlighted Bruce as spokesman for the Reaganomics 'National Renewal'. Won Grammy award for best male rock vocalist in 1985. Did 6-week global tour for Amnesty International along with Sting, Peter Gabriel, Youssou N'Dour and Tracy Chapman . The 1988 album 'Tunnel of Love' is a collection of sombre love songs.

Program Notes
Cultural diversity has been a hallmark of the United States since its beginnings. And the broad range of the music our country has produced from its earliest days reflects this rich palette of ethnic and cultural influences. The program we offer tonight merely skims the surface of this "melting pot," yet it affords a glimpse of a number of stylistic divergences and resonances. Irving Fine's small but precious legacy of compositions is one of the real treasures of American music. Its shameful neglect for many years now seems to be abating. Few other American composers so felicitously combine an almost Ravel-like delicacy and love of detail and craft with a real "American-sounding" harmonic syntax and gift for melody. A revered teacher at Harvard and later at Brandeis, Fine's life was tragically brief. He died unexpectedly in his 48th year, on the brink of an important breakthrough to the world's symphonic stage with his masterful
