Addison and Steele If one wishes to know what the eighteenth-century Londoner and his environment looked like, the best source of information is the paintings and engravings of William Hogarth ; if one wishes to know what the eighteenth-century Londoner thought about, one can do no better than to read The Spectator : it both conditioned and freshened the minds of its readers, and it was read throughout the century. George Sherburn
Joseph Addison (1672-1719) Addison was born in Milston, Wiltshire and later educated at Salisbury, the Charterhouse, and finally at Queen's College, Oxford. After five years at Oxford, Addison left to travel Europe and earned a reputation as a great gentleman whose only fault was a weakness for wine and an occasional smoke. Finding himself without a job at 33 years old, he was asked to write a poem about the Duke of Marlborough's victory of Blenheim. The poem was so well liked by the Whig party that he was named Vice Commissioner of appeals and later Under-Secretary of State (Gibbs). Joseph Addison died in 1719 and was buried in Westminster Abbey.

THE LIFE OF RICHARD STEELE.
London: 1889 Two volumes. pp. (x), 419; (8), 452 + Plates. 8vo. 24 cm. Original red publisher's cloth binding. Very nice set. Sir Richard Steele (1672-1729) was born in Dublin, and became the most celebrated essayist and playwright of his era. He was educated at Charterhouse (while Addison attended), and went to Merton College, Oxford. He briefly entered the army, and reacted to the military life by taking up writing. He quickly authored three successful comedies; served as gentleman waiter to Prince George of Denmark; and in 1707 became an editor of the London Gazette.
Steele recognized the enormous possibilities of periodical literature distributed by post-coaches, and founded (with Addison) two of the greatest efforts of that genre. The 'Tatler' (1709-1711) and the 'Spectator' (1711-1712) exposed the affectations, conceits, vices, and corruptions of all levels of society to the derision of humorous satire and comedic caricature. Along with moral, literary, and political comments we can find here too the beginnings of the modern novel.
In 1713 Steele entered parliament, but was expelled the following year because of his pamphleteering and publishing in support of the House of Hanover. Upon the succession of George I he was rewarded for his attachment to that cause with a knighthood, and supervision of the Drury Lane Theatre. After disagreements with Addison, who was in the ministry, he lost his office, and retired to Wales.

TATLER, The. [The Tatler].The Lucubrations of Isaac Bickerstaff Esq. London. John Morphew. 1710 Folio. 2 vols. bound in one., pp. iv + 114f. +iv; viii, 271f. + vi., Contemporary panelled calf, rebacked; banded spine. First edition of "The Tatler", in the original tri-weekly numbers. A fine set of this famous paper: the title-pages, indices, and dedications for both volumes are all present. This prototype of the entertaining social gazette was created by Sir Richard Steele (1672-1729), Irish essayist and dramatist, writing under the pseudonym ‘Isaac Bickerstaff’. Issued three times weekly, the paper proved an instant success. From number 18 onwards it was jointly edited with Joseph Addison (1672-1719), poet, essayist and politician, and its contents gradually developed into a collection of critical essays on diverse topics. Both the Tatler, and its successor the Spectator are traditionally said to have been ‘born in the coffee-house’, as many of the articles are actually dated from London coffee-houses. This stems from the fact that the editors regularly attended a number of London coffee-houses to exchange the latest news and social and literary gossip with other men of note. A B C ... XYZ (Photo Not Available) The Sir Roger de Coverly ( or Finishing dance ) is a true English Folk dance and was one of the prettiest of them all, It was probably named in 1650 after "Grandfather DeCoverly" and was published in Playford's "The Dancing Master" in 1690. The Sir Roger De Coverly was founded on the old Contre Danses Country Dances ) and was the forerunner to the Virginia Reel. It was first introduced to the French Ballets in 1745 and is said to have been revived at her in 1844. Once it became popular as an old Ballroom dance (1800's), it was used to finish the evening's dances ( last dance ). It was very proper to finish the night with a simple dance everyone could and would do, The De Coverly fit the bill. In America it was known as the Virginia Reel
This dance is formed in sets of six or eight couples, in two lines, the ladies on one side and their partners directly opposite.

The Life of Richard Steele
STEELE, SIR RICHARD (1672-1729)
Richard Steele lived to see four monarchs reign over England: King William and Queen Mary, jointly; Queen Anne; and King George I. He was born in Dublin on March 12, 1672.
He was born in the same year as his friend and writing collaborator, Joseph Addison, whom he met as a boy of twelve at Charterhouse in 1684. Addison and Steele continued their friendship in university and throughout most of their lives. The pair worked together on the periodical, the Tatler.
Steele attended Christ Church Oxford, and later Merton College, and held the position of postmaster at Merton.
He fought a duel with Captain Kelly in Hyde Park in 1700, which severely injured the latter man. It turned Steele off this tradition for the rest of his life.
Steele frequently coffee houses to consume both the novel beverage and social gossip.
He lived in a time when politicians rewarded literary work. The two spheres overlapped in many spots.
He received the following positions when George I ascended the throne: Justice of the Peace, Deputy Lieutenant of Middlesex, Surveyor of the Royal Stables, Governor of the Royal Company of Comedians. As well, he was knighted in 1715.
