Chairman and CEO, Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Joseph Cappy has served as chairman and chief executive officer of Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group since 1997, when the car rental company was spun off from Chrysler in an initial public offering. He had overseen Chrysler’s car rental units, which included Snappy Rent A Car, since 1993. With a broad background in finance, marketing and management, Cappy has steered Dollar Thrifty through the challenges that have beleaguered the travel industry over the last two years. Not only was the company the only profitable major car rental operation for the first quarter of 2002, but it also has begun implementing an aggressive growth strategy to streamline operations and acquire franchised operations in key markets. Dollar Thrifty was listed among the Fortune 1,000 this year. Cappy began his career with Ford Motor Co., where he held various financial, sales and marketing roles before being appointed general marketing manager of the Lincoln-Mercury division in 1980.

THE GOLF COURSE MYSTERY
Chester K. Steele
CHAPTER I PUTTING OUT There was nothing in that clear, calm day, with its blue sky and its flooding sunshine, to suggest in the slightest degree the awful tragedy so close at hand - that tragedy which so puzzled the authorities and which came so close to wrecking the happiness of several innocent people. The waters of the inlet sparkled like silver, and over those waters poised the osprey, his rapidly moving wings and fan-spread tail suspending him almost stationary in one spot, while, with eager and far-seeing eyes, he peered into the depths below. The bird was a dark blotch against the perfect blue sky for several seconds, and then, suddenly folding his pinions and closing his tail, he darted downward like a bomb dropped from an aeroplane. There was a splash in the water, a shower of sparkling drops as the osprey arose, a fish vainly struggling in its talons, and from a dusty gray roadster, which had halted along the highway while the occupant watched the hawk, there came an exclamation of satisfaction. "Did you see that, Harry?" called the occupant of the gray car to a slightly built, bronzed companion in a machine of vivid yellow, christened by some who had ridden in it the "Spanish Omelet." "Did you see that kill? As clean as a hound's tooth, and not a lost motion of a feather. Some sport-that fish-hawk! Gad!"

INTRODUCTION
The 1879 act establishing the United States Geological Survey (USGS) declares, "And all collections of rocks, minerals, soil, and fossils, and objects of natural history, archaeology, and ethnology, made by the Coast and Interior Survey, the Geological Survey, or by any other parties for the Government of the United States, when no longer needed for investigations in progress, shall be deposited in the National Museum." Many of the paleontologists affiliated with the USGS Paleontology and Stratigraphy Branch have been stationed at the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) to study and care for the national collections. This close working relationship between the USGS and the NMNH has resulted in the Smithsonian Archives acquiring records and special collections documenting paleontological work of the Survey and its scientists.
HISTORICAL NOTE
James Steele Williams (1896-1957) was an authority on Carboniferous and Permian paleontology and stratigraphy. He was educated at the University of Missouri where he received the B.A. degree in 1921, the M.A. in 1922, and the Ph. D. in 1924. Williams was appointed Instructor of Geology at the University of Missouri in 1921. He continued his academic career until 1930, eventually achieving the position of Associate Professor. In addition to his faculty post, Williams held appointment as Geologist on the staff of the Missouri Bureau of Mines and Geology. In 1930 he joined the United States Geological Survey's (USGS), Section of Paleontology as assistant, and eventually successor, to George Herbert Girty a leading specialist on late Paleozoic marine fauna. Williams remained with the USGS for the remainder of his career, and at the time of his death he had risen to the position of Principal Geologist.

Precision specific-heat studies of thin superfluid films
Lindsay M. Steele, Charles J. Yeager, and Daniele Finotello
Department of Physics, Kent State University, Kent, Ohio 44242
Received 5 February 1993 We report precision specific-heat measurements for two-dimensional helium films in Anopore membranes and in Millipore filter paper. Above the transition temperature and for films less than a superfluid layer thick, we find a distinct specific-heat peak which can be understood in terms of the Kosterlitz-Thouless vortex unbinding mechanism. Although our results are well described by the planar theory, transition broadening becomes evident for thicker films. URL: http://link.aps.org/abstract/PRL/v71/p3673
