Tribal Detective Fiction
Jack London's "The Master of Mystery" (1902) is the prototype of stories involving mystery, intrigue and conflict among members of "primitive" tribes. Set among a Native American band, it tells a story of crime, mystery and punishment, and must be classified as a mystery story, although a very unusual one. It is at the start of a tradition that includes Australian writer A. E. Martin's tale of mystery among the Aborigines, "The Power of the Leaf" (1950), and Stephen Vincent Benét's science fiction tale of future tribalism among people living in an Eastern North America that has reverted to savagery, "By the Waters of Babylon" (1936). (Benét's tale in turn anticipates a similar vision of a future United States in Ursula K. LeGuin's science fiction novel
