Who is St. Jude?
The Story of St. Jude Thaddeus
The origins of devotion to St. Jude as the patron of seemingly impossible and desperate causes are nearly as obscure as details of the life of the great Apostle, but devotion to St. Jude has never been more popular than today.
Jesus inspired devotion to St. Jude when he directed St. Bridget of Sweden to turn to St. Jude with great faith and confidence. In accordance with his surname, Thaddeus (which means generous, courageous, kind), Our Lord said, "He will show himself most willing to give help."
The Gospel tells us that St. Jude was a brother of St. James the Less, also one of the twelve. They are described by St. Matthew (13:55) as the "brethren" of Jesus, probably cousins. The Hebrew word for "brethren" indicates a blood relationship. His mother, Mary, was a cousin of the Blessed Mother.
St. Jude is traditionally depicted carrying the image of Jesus in his hand. This represents the imprint of the divine Countenance that was entrusted to him by Jesus. King Abagar of Edessa asked Jesus to cure him of leprosy and sent an artist to bring him a drawing of Jesus. Impressed with Abagar's great faith, Our Lord pressed his face on a cloth and gave it to St. Jude to take to Abagar and cure him. The King was cured and converted to Christianity along with most of his subjects.

St. Jude researchers create image of enzyme that orchestrates natural genetic engineering
A picture of the UvsW enzyme from a virus offers scientists important insights into how a similar enzyme in human cells controls a process called replication-dependent replication
New insight into the structure of a virus enzyme that orchestrates a natural type of genetic engineering in bacteria provides important clues into how similar enzymes control the same process in human cells during DNA replication and repair. These findings from investigators at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital are published in the April issue of Structure The St. Jude researchers developed a 3-D image of a key part of UvsW, a type of enzyme called a helicase. Helicase enzymes open up the double-stranded DNA molecules like a zipper, so each strand can be replicated to produce two new pieces of DNA. T4, a virus that infects bacteria, uses UvsW during a process called recombinant-dependent replication (RDR). RDR is a type of natural genetic engineering by which viruses, plants and animals introduce new genes into the DNA of one chromosome during replication and repair of broken DNA by using a section of another chromosome as a blueprint. The scientists studied the T4 helicase because it is a simple but effective model for understanding how similar helicases perform the same job in human cells.

St. Jude develops vaccine against potential pandemic influenza virus H5N1 using reverse genetics
Special modification of reverse genetics created at St. Jude allowed vaccine to be custom-made within weeks of emergence of virus
(MEMPHIS, TENN.April 2, 2003) Scientists at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital announced today the development of a vaccine against H5N1, a new lethal influenza virus that triggered the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a pandemic alert in February 2003. The virus appeared in birds in Hong Kong late last year and subsequently killed one of two infected people with rapidly progressive pneumonia in the past month. St. Jude developed the vaccine in only four weeks from the time it received the H5N1 sample from colleagues in Hong Kong. The announcement comes at a time when a second, as-yet-unidentified virus, has taken several lives around the world. The unknown virus, which causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), appears to have originated at the same time and in the same place as the new "flu." The development of the initial ("seed") batch of H5N1 vaccine is significant because humans do not have a natural immunity to the virus, according to Robert Webster, Ph.D., a member of the Department of Infectious Diseases at St. Jude. Rather, humans appear to become infected through contact with chickens and other birds. In the past the virus killed only the chickens it infected. But the new variant of H5N1 also killed many kinds of wild birds, which is unusual.

St. Jude (or Judas Thaddaeus), one of the Apostles, after Pentecost like other Apostles went on missionary work. According to the 6th century apocryphal texts he preached in Persia with Simon, where they were both martyred. They were found guilty in overturning statues of idols, and their throats were cut.

Jude the Apostle
St. Jude is known by several names. In Lebanon he is called Lebbeus, Levi, or Laba and is venerated in the town of Hosroun. The Maronite Synaxarion says that he was one of the Seventy disciples of the Lord and calls him by the name of Thaddeus. According to one tradition, he suffered martyrdom in Raha, and according to another, he died in Beirut.
Today St. Jude is considered to be one of the Twelve (luke 6:16 and Acts 1:13). Matthew 10:3 and Mark 3:18 refer to him as Thaddeus so as to avoid confusing him with Judas Iscariot (John 14:22). The Thaddeus in Aramaic means, "chest" and in Hebrew the name Lebbeus means "heart". Jude was the brother of James the Less and Simon who were the first bishops of Jerusalem. After the Last Supper when Jesus promised to manifest himself to everyone who would love him, Jude asked the Lord why he didn't manifest himself to the world, since he thought that Jesus was to be a secular messiah, an earthly king. A brief epistle is ascribed to Jude and most scholars accept Jude as the author of this letter. Little is known about the preaching or death of Jude, although some have said that he died in Persia. Devotion to Saint Jude is very strong in the Maronite Church and many churches are named in his honor. He is know as

St. Jude
ST. JUDE, glorious Apostle, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the name of the traitor has caused you to be forgotten by many, but the true Church invokes you universally as the Patron of things despaired of; pray for me, that finally I may receive the consolations and the succor of Heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings, particularly (here make your request), and that I may bless God with the Elect throughout Eternity. Amen. On each bead is said a Hail Mary and the following invocation... St. Jude, Apostle martyr and relative at Our Lord Jesus Christ, at Mary and of Joseph, intercede for us. At end say following prayer: O Holy St. Jude, Apostle and Martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near kinsman of Jesus Christ, faithful intercessor of all who invoke your special patronage in time of need, to you I have recourse from the depth of my heart and humbly beg to who God has given such great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present and urgent petition. In return I promise to make your name known and cause you to be invoked. St. Jude pray for us and all who invoke your aid. The Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle
St. Petersburg, Florida Web Site: www.cathedralofstjude.org Mass Times and Cathedral Location Sometimes cathedrals are made, not born. What is now the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle was founded in 1950 as St. Jude the Apostle Church, a parish of the Diocese of St. Augustine. When the Diocese of St. Petersburg was formed in 1968, founding Bishop Charles B. McLaughlin decided that the 1,500-seat capacity and location of St. Jude Church in St. Petersburg made it a good "mother church" for the diocese. On June 17, 1950 Bishop McLaughlin was installed as the first bishop of St. Petersburg in a liturgy also establishing the Canonical Erection of the new diocese and St. Jude the Apostle Church as its cathedral. Bishop W. Thomas Larkin was installed there as the diocese's second bishop in 1979. Bishop John C. Favalora was installed as its third bishop in 1989, and Monsignor Robert N. Lynch was ordained as bishop and installed as the fourth bishop of the Diocese of St. Petersburg Diocese on Jan. 26, 1996. The bishop of a diocese is also pastor of its cathedral, which holds his chair, or cathedra. Therefore, Bishop Lynch is pastor of the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle, but the responsibilities of overseeing a five-county diocese make the daily management of a parish difficult. As rector of the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle, the Very Reverend David T. DeJulio oversees the pastoral responsibilities for the bishop.
