Temple Square embodies spirit of the Saints yesterday and today
By Jerry Johnston

Deseret News staff writer If the Salt Lake Valley were an oyster, Temple Square would be the pearl. The hopes and history of many Utahns have been shaped there.
At the heart of the square is the Salt Lake Temple
Once the defining feature of Salt Lake City's skyline, the temple today is dwarfed by office buildings; yet its vital role as a holy place for marriages, baptisms and sealings is undiminished.
Beside the jutting, granite spires of the temple stands the Tabernacle massive pipe organ
Nearby the temple and Tabernacle, the Assembly Hall stands like a dutiful child. Described in some texts as a ''miniature cathedral,'' the hall was made from materials from the other two buildings. Its array of spires on the outside and fine woodwork and acoustics on the inside make The Assembly Hall a favorite concert and lecture venue.
After viewing the major buildings, including two modern visitors centers, visitors may want to turn their attention to the many monuments and statues.
Each monument tends to embody a virtue the LDS people hold dear.

Fountain Temple Square is the world headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints , commonly known as the Mormons. After being forced to leave Nauvoo, Illinois, members of the Church arrived in Salt Lake Valley in 1847. Brigham Young selected the grounds for the temple promptly on his arrival. From this center, the Church has grown to over 11,000,000 people. With the growth of the church, has come also the growth of Temple Square and its facilities. One of the first structures used was called the bowery where church meetings were held. Soon a tabernacle was built later known as the Old Tabernacle. In 1867 the Mormon Tabernacle was built, home to the famed Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Tabernacle Organ. The

“Civilizations that get too far from the land are bound to decay.” –J.I. Rodale Hello, my name is Tim Beckman and welcome to my Square Foot Gardening Page. I have been gardening since about 1988 and gardening in my current location of Indianapolis, Indiana (USDA Zone 5) since 1994.
Current Picture of My Garden (Updated 5/16/2004)
WHAT IS SQUARE FOOT GARDENING?
Square Foot Gardening is a technique of intensive planting developed by a retired civil engineer, Mel Bartholomew, in the 1970's. Mel describes the technique in his book, Square Foot Gardening as "a system of laying out, planting, and maintaining a productive, attractive garden in any amount of space. The garden is based on a grid of 1-foot by 1-foot squares, with single seeds or plants placed in carefully determined spacings." Mel goes on to say, "The square foot system lets you make the most of your garden space to conserve the amount of water, soil conditioners, and labor needed to produce a maximum amount of food in that space. A square foot garden takes only one-fifth the space and work of a conventional single-row garden to produce the same harvest." Includes short description of a magic Square, rules for trying to break a magic Square record and all the records between 1975 and now.
http://www.recordholders.org/en/records/magic.html
The Largest Magic Square
A magic square is a quadratic scheme of numbers which adds up vertically, horizontally and diagonally to the same sum. Example: (sum is 15 for each row, column and diagonal) There is no such thing like a record for finding the world's largest magic square. There are well-known algorithms for constructing an arbitrarily large magic square. It is easy to compute very large magic squares. However, the records in this list are for printing or writing magic squares. You can read more about magic squares at forum.swarthmore.edu/alejandre/magic.square.html Interesting records for multi-magic squares (not only the sum of the numbers but also the sum of their squares, cubes, etc. must be the same) can be found at www.multimagie.com BOOKS:
The Zen of Magic Squares, Circles and Stars
Solving Magic Squares
The Rules
  • The magic square must be written/printed on paper. It is not sufficient just to calculate it by a computer. It is allowed to compose the magic square from many sheets of paper, but they MUST lay together to form one scheme of numbers. This scheme must be a square, not just any rectangle. To verify the sums in each row/column and diagonal a test run of the used computer program should be made under supervision of a computer/ mathematics specialist who can prove that the program is correct.

LOVE SUPREME by ADAM HASLETT Gay nuptials and the making of modern marriage. Issue of 2004-05-31
Posted 2004-05-24 In December of 1990, Genora Dancel and Ninia Baehr, a lesbian couple from Honolulu, applied for and were denied a license to marry. They decided to file suit against the state for discrimination. The local branch of the A.C.L.U. declined to represent them, and the national gay legal organizations initially kept their distance, considering the issue premature. But the couple persisted, and three years later the Hawaii Supreme Court became the first in the nation to support the right of same-sex couples to wed. Conservative religious groups poured money into the state and eventually helped pass an amendment to its constitution declaring marriage an exclusively heterosexual institution.
These government-sponsored contracts are at the center of the fight over same-sex unions. In the modern administrative state, civil marriage condenses within a single document a vast array of legal, financial, and medical rights and benefits. Like citizenship for the immigrant, it is a passport to a more secure world. As the old status of marriage has come to include such a range of contractual benefits, the debates over equality within and access to the institution have intensified.
Which is one of the reasons that the opposition to it is so fierce. It has come to symbolize what is, historically speaking, radical about contemporary marriage: the decline of the patriarchal legal structure and the rise of the goal of self-fulfillment. Gay marriage is unsettling, to many, not because it departs from modern meanings of matrimony but because it embodies them.

Square One TV First Show Last Show Genre Kids Network PBS Slot Day Various Slot Time Various Jumped The Shark when... Votes Never Jumped Mathnet Kate Monday replaced by Pat Tuesday Other Thoughts:
  • I remember watching this show way back in the 80s when I was three and four and five. My favorite part was the "Math-Net" skit, although the song about the "Nine" times table, ("Nine, nine nine! It all comes back to nine!") was stuck in my head for a good seven or eight years. Anyway, the show jumped the shark when they replaced Kate, the blonde, with Kate, the strawberry blonde. I'm not sure exactly, because I was very young, but I think this happened around the episode when she broke her leg. I adored Square One! That was one of the shows I watched religiously when I was in grade school. Mathnet was my favourite part of the show. I don't remember much else about the show, except a song about probability that keeps getting stuck in my head. "Probability/ Don't you mess with me/Long as there's a ghost of a chance!" Anyone else remember that? never ever JTS!!! this show was the coolest. I remember the video game math man. and mathnet with george frankly and the other lady (two actually). I used to watch after school. I think in middle school we used to watch in math class occaisonally.
