More than 60 years old when he started out on Easter Day 1245, this Franciscan friar withstood the bitter cold of the Siberian winter as he travelled to the court of the Great Khan (Emperor) in Mongolia. Veda is ultimate source of knowledge: United Nations
The tradition of Vedic chanting of India has been declared a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by Unesco for being "the ultimate source of knowledge and one of the world's oldest surviving cultural traditions." In a meeting held between director-general Koichiro Matsuura and president Jaun Goytisolo at Unesco headquarters in Paris on November 8, Unesco declared, "Although Vedic texts were recorded in writing 15 centuries ago, their principal means of transmission remains oral. The outstanding value lies not only in the rich content of its oral literature but also in the unique and ingenious techniques employed by the Brahmin priests in preserving the texts intact over three and half millennia. The complex recitation technique, requiring rigorous training from childhood, is based on a specific pronunciation of each letter and specific speech combinations to ensure that the sound of each word remains unchanged.

    John Hanning Speke (1827 - 1864)
Born in Bideford in Devon, Speke was commissioned in the British Indian Army in 1844, where he served in the Punjab and travelled in the Himalayas and Tibet. In April 1855, as a member of Richard Burton's party attempting to explore Somaliland, he was severely wounded in an attack by the Somalis. Invalided home, Speke volunteered for the Crimea and served during the war with a regiment of Turks. In December 1856 he accepted an invitation from Burton to join an expedition to search for the reported great lakes in east central Africa and, particularly, to try and find Lake Nyassa, said to be the origin of the Nile. They left Zanzibar in June 1857 and, after exploring the East African coast for six months to find the best route inland, became the first Europeans to reach Lake Tanganyika in February 1858. During the return trip, Speke left Burton, who was unwell, and struck out northward alone. In July he found his lake, which he named in honour of Queen Victoria. Speke's conclusion about the lake as a Nile source was rejected by Burton and was disputed by many in England. However, the Royal Geographical Society, which had sponsored the expedition, honoured Speke for his exploits and commissioned a second expedition in 1860 to resolve the dispute. Speke and Captain James Grant mapped a portion of Lake Victoria. In July 1862 Speke, unaccompanied by Grant, found the Nile's exit from the lake and named it Ripon Falls. The party then tried to follow the river's course, but an outbreak of tribal warfare required them to change their route.

John Hanning Speke May 4 September 15 ) was an officer in the British Indian army, who made three voyages of exploration to Africa In he made his first voyage, joining the already famous Richard Francis Burton on an expedition to Somalia . Despite hardships, the two managed to reach the 'forbidden city' Harar In , Burton was asked to make a voyage to East Africa, to find the sources of the Nile . He again chose Speke as his companion. The two travelled inland from Zanzibar and discovered Lake Tanganyika . They heard of a second lake in the area, but Burton was too sick to make the voyage. Speke thus went alone, and found the lake, which he christened Lake Victoria Speke returned to England before Burton, and made their voyage famous. Burton was embittered, because Speke declared Lake Victoria to be the Nile's source, whereas Burton believed Lake Tanganyika to be so, and because Speke had by then already been chosen to lead an expedition to further clarify the issue. Together with James Augustus Grant , Speke left from Zanzibar in October . They travelled on the west side around Lake Victoria without actually seeing much of it, but on the north side of the lake, Speke found the Nile flowing out of it and discovered the

The Swarm of Beetles from What Led to the Discovery of the Source of the Nile (1864), by John Hanning Speke
This horrifying short selection comes from John Hanning Speke (1827 1864)'s book WHAT LED TO THE DISCOVERY OF THE SOURCE OF THE NILE, a title that is somewhat misleading. There was great rivalry between African explorers of all nationalities in the middle of the nineteenth century and many reputations were made and lost with claims of being the first white man to arrive at some particular place. Speke's book notwithstanding, it was not until Alan Morehead's two volumes THE WHITE NILE (1960) and THE BLUE NILE (1962) that the complete story of the Nile's exploration, and all of its white male "discoverers", was fully told. Speke was an adventurer of the old school pith helmet, swagger stick, camp bathtub, etc. and a great friend of the explorer Sir Richard Burton, who is not to be confused with the hard drinking Welsh actor of the same name. Speke and Burton undertook two African journeys together, in 1854 and 1858 and then had a violent falling out. They each published separate accounts of their efforts, and their rivalry became front page news in the tabloid newspapers of the day. Speke died in a hunting accident just before a public debate between the two was held in front of the Royal Geographic Society in London. Whether Speke's death was a suicide or not is a matter still debated in some academic and literary circles.
