John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892) was an American poet and abolitionist. Samuel Thomas Pickard (1828-1915) was an editor of the Portland (Me.) Transcript. He was married to a niece of Whittier's and became Whittier literary executor and biographer.

Few eighteenth- or early-nineteenth-century women writers are represented in the Manuscript Division's holdings. One exception is historian, poet, and playwright Mercy Otis Warren catalog record ], whose pioneering account of the History of the Rise, Progress, and Termination of the American Revolution (1805) may be read in the original longhand draft (7 volumes; 1801-05) held by the division. Nineteenth-century novelist Constance Cary Harrison (1843-1920), the wife of Jefferson Davis's private secretary, wrote satires about southern and New York society. 2 Items Letters to sister Flora Sackett (b.1847). Sacket enlisted in 1861 as Third Assistant Engineer and was promoted to Second Assistant Engineer in 1863. He resigned in 1865. On 11 August 1863, Sackett writes from aboard the U.S. gunboat Chippewa near Port Royal, SC, and on 14 October 1864 from aboard the U. S. S. Mattabesett , part of the 3rd Division, North Atlantic Blockading Squadron, "I mean to cast my vote for Old Abe. We have only one or two McClellan officers on the ship." Sackett also writes of ending the blockade-running into Wilmington. He considers the election of Union candidates as important to the preservation of the Union as battlefield victories and also discusses draft resistors. Augustine is the brother of Homer Skipp Sackett ; see following entry.

EMMA DOROTHY ELIZA NEVITTE SOUTHWORTH
SOUTHWORTH, EMMA DOROTHY ELIZA NEVITTE (1819 1899), American novelist, was born in Washington, D.C., on the 26th of December 1819. She studied in a school kept by her stepfather, Joshua L. Henshaw, and in 1840 married Frederick H. Southworth, of Utica, N.Y. After 1843 she supported herself by teaching. Her first story, The Irish Refugee, was published in the Baltimore Saturday Visitor. Her first novel, Retribution, a serial for the National Era, published in book form in 1846, was so well received that she gave up teaching and became a regular contributor to various periodicals, especially the New York Ledger. She lived in Georgetown, D.C., until 1876, then in Yonkers, N.Y., and again in Georgetown, D.C., where she died on the 3oth of June 1899. Her novels numbered more than sixty; some of them were translated into German, French and Spanish; in 1872 an edition of thirtyfive volumes was published in Philadelphia. They include The Deserted Wife (1850); Mark Sutherland (1853); Hickory Halt (1855); Unknown (1874); Gloria (1877); The Trail of the Serpent (1879); Nearest and Dearest (1881); The Mothers Secret (1883); An Exiles Bride (1887); The Hidden Hand (1888); and Broken Pledges (1891).
