http://victorian.lang.nagoya-u.ac.jp/concordance.html
This Hyper-Concordance is written in C++, a program that scans and displays lines based on a command entered by the user. The main advantage of the C++ program is that it not only identifies the concordance lines but the words occurring to the left and the right of the word or phrase searched. It also reports the total number of text lines, the total word count and the number of occurrences of the word or phrase searched. The full text of the book is displayed in a box at the bottom of the screen. Each line of the text is numbered, and the line number and the term(s) searched provide a link to the full text. The Hyper-Concordance displays two pull-down boxes. The user can first choose one of a selection of authors from the box and then one from a list of the author's works. There are four limiting options displayed before searching: case sensitive, non-alphabet character sensitive, head length and tail length. The searcher can also ascertain the book's total word count and vocabulary distribution by searching without a query. I hope this web-based KWIC concordance (Key Word in Context) offers a clear survey of Victorian literary texts. My warmest thanks go to a colleague of mine, Dr. Masahiro Komatsu (Graduate School of Languages and Cultures, Nagoya University), who was kind enough to write the C++ program.

An excerpt from Select Works of Tobias Smollett
circa 1766
Mr. Cameron of Lochiel, the chief of that clan, whose father was attainted for having been concerned in the last rebellion, returning from France, in obedience to a proclamation and act of parliament passed at the beginning of the late war, paid a visit to his own country, and hired a farm in the neighbourhood of his father's house, which had been burnt to the ground. The clan, though ruined and scattered, no sooner heard of his arrival, than they flocked to him in from all quarters, to welcome his return, and in a few days stocked his farm with seven hundred black cattle, which they had saved in the general wreck of their affairs: but their beloved chief, who was a promising youth, did not live to enjoy the fruits of their fidelity and attachment. Editor's Notes: The "Select Works of Tobias Smollett," which included a memoir of Mr. Smollett's life and writings by Sir Walter Scott, was published in 1851. A well traveled and written gentleman the 18th century novelist Tobias George Smollett (1721-1771) was born at Dalquharn House on the family estate of Bonhill in the Vale of Leven, near the village of Renton (Dumbartonshire.) A new family home, the famed "Cameron House" (named after the "crooked" peninsula of land at Loch Lomond on which it is located, not a Cameron family connection) was built in 1763. It now contains a small museum on Tobias Smollett.

[Editorial Note: As Robert Darnton pointed out in his Introduction to The Great Cat Massacre and Other Episodes in French Cultural History (1984), the "perception of . . . distance may serve as the starting point of an investigation. . . . When you realize that you are not getting somethinga joke, a proverb, a ceremonythat is particularly meaningful . . . you can see where to grasp a foreign system of meaning in order to unravel it." (P. 78) And the past is proverbially a foreign country. So here is George Denison Prentice, one of the foremost wits of antebellum America, on the subject of women. To the extent we "get" the jokes, we have begun to enter into a most important mindset, that of the conventionally wise man of the period. Two of his paragraphs dealt with Jane Swisshelm, editor of the Pittsburgh Visiter [her spelling]. Her account of their duels of wits, from her autobiography, is here George Denison Prentice, Prenticeana; or, Wit and Humor in Paragraphs.

Failing to get his tragedy The Regicide produced, he shipped as a surgeon's mate in the British navy the following year. In 1744 he returned to London with his wife, a Jamaican heiress, practiced as a surgeon for a time, and then began an active literary career. His first three novels, Roderick Random Peregrine Pickle (1751), and Ferdinand Count Fathom (1753), are tough, coarse, episodic adventure stories, exposing a crude and brutal society. In 1755, Smollett translated Cervantes's Don Quixote into English. His novel Sir Lancelot Greaves Don Quixote, is considered his weakest work. Smollett achieved his greatest success with Humphry Clinker (1771), a comical but sympathetic story of a family's adventures through England and Scotland written in the form of letters.
