Tobias George Smollett
N ovelista escocés. Nació en Dalquhurn, condado de Dumbarton, y estudió en la Universidad de Glasgow. Fue ayudante de cirujano en un barco de la Armada británica y en 1744 comenzó a practicar la cirugía en Londres. Su carrera literaria comenzó con una obra de teatro histórica y algunas sátiras políticas, pero fue su primera novela picaresca, Aventuras de Roderick Random (1748) la que le hizo famoso. Se trata de una obra cómica vigorosa y mordaz sobre un marinero británico. Después escribió varias novelas en las que se mezclan la sátira con aventuras variopintas y personajes grotescos. Las aventuras de Peregrine Pickle (1751) y El conde Fernando (1753) tuvieron tanto éxito que Smollett abandonó la cirugía. Su mejor novela, La expedición de Humphry Clinker (1771), escrita en Italia en los dos últimos años de su vida, se ha convertido en un clásico. Se trata de una divertida historia, narrada a través de cartas, sobre los viajes de una familia por Inglaterra y Escocia. El ingenio cómico de los personajes y acontecimientos influyó en gran medida en las obras de Dickens. Otras obras suyas son Historia de Inglaterra (1757-1758), con la que ganó fama y dinero;

from ' Humorists Of The Eighteenth Century Smollett is typical of the Scotsmen who in the eighteenth century sought fame and fortune in England because only there was prosperity to be found. Like Fielding, he came of a good family that could afford him little except a sound education. Then, having been apprenticed to a surgeon, he came to London in the hope of becoming a dramatist; having failed to interest anyone, he solicited a surgeon's commission in the Royal Navy, and went on the ill-fated West Indian expedition of 1740, of which the early chapters of Roderick Random give a vivid account. When he returned to London, he set up as a doctor whose interest in literature was limited to occasional verse satires. Yet, after only eight months of interrupted work, he produced Roderick Random , and its immediate success set him up as a literary figure, a rival to Fielding who heartily detested him for obvious reasons. Smollett was interested only in telling a story, without regard for any lesson it might teach or for even the fairly lax conventions of the eighteenth century; indeed, his hero, a man of 'modest merit struggling with every difficulty', was an unprincipled scoundrel. Moreover, Smollett was convinced that Fielding had shamelessly plagiarized his work for Tom Jones , and Fielding could well have regarded the other as a pusher, a self-seeker no whit better than Roderick.

Tobias George Smollett
Novelist
Smollett was a less prolific novelist than Scott , and his books are not as readable as Stevenson 's, but he was the first Scottish novelist and he has never been surpassed. Indeed, Smollett can be said to have prefigured the Scottish fiction of the nineties of the twentieth century - the fiction of Irvine Welsh and his contemporaries, descriptive of low life as it really is. It is unlikely that critics nowadays would malign an author for satire which made readers writhe, or for the grotesqueness of his imagery, but Smollett was upbraided for this, and, even, for his use of researchers in wide-ranging works of non-fiction. Smollett was an original whose worth has rarely been properly acknowledged, not least because his contemporaries, Fielding Richardson and Sterne , were in the same class as he was, but also because he was an Anglo-Scot, whose countrymen have never identified with him in the same way as they identified, for example with the other exile Stevenson.

Tobias George Smollett (1721-1771)
The work is a series of episodes concerning the adventures of the rascally hero, Peregrine Pickle, on the Continent and in England. Smollett's humour and satiric skill are very much in evidence, but the principal merit of the book is in its excellent characterizations. In 1771 his masterpiece appeared, The Expedition of Humphry Clinker, a satiric novel in epistolary form, presenting the peripatetic search for health of an irascible Welsh invalid, Matthew Bramble, who is accompanied on his travels by a comical rejtinue of relatives and servants. It is primarily Humphry Clinker, that has secured Smollett a permanent place among the other eighteenth-century masters of fiction, Defoe, Richardson, Fielding and Sterne. As a broad satirist, Smollett devotes himself to arousing what he calls "that generous indignation which ought to animate the reader against the sordid and vicious disposition of the world." And like most satirists, the vehemently idealistic Smollett performs his task primarily through revelation's of the alarming distance between human possibility and human actuality.
