Parallels in Ellen White's and Joseph Smith's Writings
Both Part of New England "Visionary Culture"?
JAMES WALTERS
Parallels between the writings of Adventism’s Ellen White (1827-1915) and Joseph Smith(1805-1844), founder of Mormonism, have been discovered by Phyllis Watson of Angwin, California. Although Watson believes her parallels demonstrate literary dependency, several American church historians and the White Estate, who were given a 32-page sample of Watson’s 300 page manuscript, disagree. They see the most likely explanation to be what one historian called "common milieu"—a similar religious background and place. Indeed, Richard Lyman Bushman, a devout Mormon and leading scholar in Mormon studies at Columbia University, now believes that Ellen White should be added to the dozen or so New England visionaries he has studied who published accounts of their experiences in the first half of the 19th century. Bushman speaks of a "visionary culture" that prophetic figures such as Smith and White inhabited. "When people spoke of visionary experiences, there was a style they adopted, just as political scientists or fashion columnists or dance critics have a common vocabulary today," says Bushman. "That does not mean the experiences were the same or of equal validity."
A Prod to American Church Historians
Watson, a layperson, hopes that the parallels she has documented will prod professional church historians and theologians to action. Her hopes will likely be realized.

by Trisha Bridges
  • Founded by Joseph Smith (1805-1844) Book of Mormon published in 1830 Church of Jesus Christ established April 6, 1830 Name changed to Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints 1837 As of 1998, the Church had 10,354,241 members. Members in the United States totaled 5,023,158.
Text they base their validity from: John 10:16 "Other sheep I have, which are not of this fold." Supposedly this refers to a Middle Eastern civilization that migrated to the Americas called the Nephites. Christ appeared to them after His resurrection and preached to them,. The Bible is the Word of God only "as far as it has been translated correctly." They also claim the Book of Mormon to be the sealed scroll mentioned in Isaiah 29 and to be superior to the Bible, being the final authority when the Book of Mormon contradicts it.

The Prophet Joseph Smith, Jr. (1805-1844)
Founder of the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-Day Saints
Nauvoo plays prominently in the history of the Latter-Day Saint church. Having been driven out of Kirtland, Ohio, the Saints had fled to Independence, Missouri, which the Lord had identified as the site He had chosen to be the New Zion. However, that was not to be, for the Saints encountered much hatred and persecution, resulting in their being driven into exile once more, and in the imprisonment for a time of the Prophet in the Liberty, Missouri jail. The Saints, having left Independence, sought refuge in the state of Illinois, where they were granted land in what was then the town of Commerce, which was mostly swamp. Modern Nauvoo-photo taken one block East of the Temple. Modern Nauvoo still retains an air of its historical past. Though the streets were crowded with cars and other signs of our modern age, the buildings and settings gives one a feeling of what Nauvoo was like. There are many wonderful shops that catered to the LDS visitors, and nonmembers alike. I felt very grateful to the residents, who were very gracious towards the sudden influx of tourists. I hope that Nauvoo will in the future be the same as it is today- a small, wonderful, peaceful community. Nauvoo Temple-taken from the West (photo taken by 8 year-old Robert, Jr.)

Introduction
"Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon; or you can fall at his feet and call Him Lord and God. Let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He did not leave that open to us. He did not intend to."

AN EXPLANATION OF THE PLAT OF THE CITY OF ZION, SENT TO THE BRETHREN IN ZION, THE 25TH OF JUNE, 1833 Joseph Smith History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Period I. History of Joseph Smith, the Prophet by Himself. Volume I (Salt Lake City: Desert Book Co., 2ed. rev., 1961) The painted squares in the middle are for public buildings. The one without any figures is for store-houses for the Bishop, and to be devoted to his use. Figure first is for temples for the use of the presidency; the circles inside of the squares, are the places for the temples. You will see it contains twelve figures, two are for the temples of the lesser Priesthood. It is also to contain twelve temples. The whole plot is supposed to contain from fifteen to twenty thousand people: you will therefore see that it will require twenty-four buildings to supply them with houses of worship, schools, etc.; and none of these temples are to be smaller than the one of which we send you a draft. This temple is to be built in the square marked figure 1 and to be built where the circle is which has a cross on it on the north end. South of the plot where the line is drawn, is to be laid off for barns, stables, etc., for the use the of the city; so that no barns or stables will be in the city among the houses; the ground to be occupied for these must be laid off according to wisdom. On the north and south are to be laid off the farms for the agriculturist, and sufficient quantity of land to supply the whole plot; and if it cannot be laid off without going too great a distance from the city there must also be some laid off on the east and west

profet , USA. 1805 - 1844. Joseph Smith föddes i Vermont 1805.
