at nnj1@ra.msstate.edu Many twentieth-century writers were born in Mississippi or have spent an important part of their lives in the state. Some of the writers are world famous, while others are up-and-coming authors with a first novel that is getting much attention. Others are poets, short story writers, dramatists, essayists, or writers of historical novels or memoirs. Many have had movies made based on their work. All have contributed to the literary and cultural heritage of Mississippi. This web site provides up-to-date information about these writers as researched by the students of Starkville High School in Starkville, Mississippi. (This list is very long. Please be patient as it loads).

This section is an oval that was once the center of the cemetery. It is totally circled by lanes. We called it section 4... the cemetery doesn't. The plots in section 4 are individual size. We read the rows south to north as most of the headstones faced east. This is our own numbering system for this presentation only. The unusual aspect of this section is the ends of the oval that were made as pie slices and the headstones are not in orderly lines. The west end was all read together for that reason. There is a flag in this section. This is an extraction... we proofread to prevent errors but errors are still present. If you would like better documentation or have material that disagrees with this record contact me at: 3rd St. Books, 1615 3rd St. Marysville WA

Thanks to Nancy Adams for these pictures!

Directions from Gilmertake Hwy 271N to Bettie, turn left on FM2088, take FM2088 to FM2454, turn right, go to FM556, and turn left. The cemetery is located behind the Mattinburg church. This cemetery is fenced and well kept. Read on Mat 24, 1998 by John and Nelda Strube and submitted by the Upshur County Historical Commission.
Thanks to Geraldine Little Braswell and Ernest Glenn Campbell for the pictures and information in green from their personal files.

Thanks to Carmon C. McManigell for the use of her Puckett pictures. As hard as we all try, we are human and sometimes when reading a cemetery we miss a grave covered with leaves, fireants, or bushes. Sometimes the headstone has sunk and is mostly underground. Our area also has many graves only marked with iron ore rocks and even many unmarked graves. There are headstones that have long ago been destroyed by the elements or even vandalizm, and are hard to impossible to read the details. We would appreciate it if you would let us know if you did not find your relative which was buried
here, and would appreciate your letting us use the information you know about them. With the combined efforts of us all, we can make the Upshur County website bigger and better.
