Smith Family Papers were purchased from Emily Smith Stewart in 1965. CONTENT AND SCOPE Go To Contents Among the early Smith family documents, located in box 1, are items dating from 1731 to 1849. These materials include correspondence, journals, family records, church records, and genealogical information. Representative of individuals having papers among these documents are Samuel Smith (1714-1785), Asael Smith (1744-1830), John Smith (1781-1854), Asael Smith (1773-1848), Joseph Smith, Jr. (1805-1844), and Don Carlos Smith (1816-1844). Notable among these records is an original holographic letter written by Joseph Smith, Jr., founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The papers of Elias Smith, located in box 2 and dating from 1804 to 1888, are composed of correspondence, from 1834 to 1887, with individuals such as Joseph F. Smith and John Taylor. There are also ecclesiastical and legal documents among the papers. Notable is a copy of a manuscript, entitled "Liberty Jail Journal," and an account of the Haun's Mill Massacre. Also of interest is a letter from Brigham Young to Jesse W. Fox, relating President Young's wishes in the survey of Utah lands.

Josias served in the Revolutionary War from Cumberland Co. He was taxed in Hopewell Twp, that county, from 1779 through 1785. In 1791, he was a witness to his father-in-law's will. He purchased 100 acres in Cumberland Co. in 1789, which he sold in 1791 making a handsome profit. Josias and Hannah migrated to the frontier in Ohio Co, VA sometime between 1791 and 1794. They purchased 400 acres of land on Peters Creek, north of what is now Valley Grove, WV. They were charter members of Forks of the Wheeling Presbyterian Church, however, they are buried in Peters Run Cemetery near the location of their farm.     L. Woodward) has supplied information regarding her and her family . Hereports
    that her tombstone in Buckwheat Ridge Cemetary in Grant County, Wisconsin,
    carries the inscription: "Born 1 April 1811, Died 30 June 1886." We knowfrom
    had married a man named Costley. Mr. Woodward informs us that his namewas Pierson Costley, and that they were married in Crawford County, Missouri,in 1831. His parents were William and Margaret (Hunter) Costley who movedfrom Christian County, Kentucky, to Missouri, and then to Greene County,Illinois, in 1819. Peirson Costley died in 1850 in Missouri leaving Martha with avery large family. Word of his death was sent to her family in Wisconsin and a brother, probably Solomon, came for her and brought her and her childrento
