In 1776 he moved to London, where he published An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations (1776), the first major work of political economy. This examined in detail the consequences of economic freedom, such as division of labour, the function of markets, and the international implications of a laissez-faire economy. All money is a matter of belief. The real price of everything, what everything really costs to the man who wants to acquire it, is the toil and trouble of acquiring it. The machines that are first invented to perform any particular movement are always the most complex, and succeeding artists generally discover that, with fewer wheels the same effects may be more easily produced. What can be added to the happiness of a man who is in health, out of debt, and has a clear conscience?

    Adam Smith (1723-1790)
One of the most influential social philosophers and political economists in all history is Adam Smith, from Kirkcaldy, Fife, whose master work An Inquiry into the nature of causes of the Wealth of Nations was first published in 1776 but has continued its appeal (and enormous influence) ever since.
First studying mathematics, natural philosophy and moral philosophy at Glasgow University, Smith entered Balliol College, Oxford in 1740. When he returned to Edinburgh to lecture, he met philosopher and skeptic David Hume as well as other leading intellectuals and trendsetters. In 1751, he became Chair of Logic at Glasgow and later of Moral Philosophy.
On a visit to Paris in 1764-5, Smith became acquainted with the ideas of many of the leading French thinkers of the day and was able to experience first-hand the closely controlled economy of France. His Wealth of Nations consequently reflected much of the ideas he had so readily absorbed in that country. It can be said to have marked the transition from a more-or-less late medieval to a modern economy. Smith was able to grasp intuitively what it was that constituted the real wealth of a nation; he advocated the then-revolutionary idea of free trade as a means of increasing that wealth.
The publication of Smith's work greatly influenced the thinking and policies of British Prime Minister William Pitt. For Smith, it was the "invisible hand" of competition that acted as the guiding light for en economic system based on individual self-interests. The idea of free trade dominated British economic policy right up until the 20th century when Smith's ideas were abandoned in favor of the old controls and restrictions that he had rightly condemned as being counterproductive to the acquisition of a country's wealth.

was born on June 5th, 1723 in Kirkcaldy in Scotland, and little is known of his early life. He entered the University of Glasgow at the age of 14, already a center of excellence and seat of the Scottish Enlightenment. He won a scholarship to Balliol College, Oxford at the age of 17, but found it a dry and archaic environment compared with the challenge of new thought that he had experienced at Glasgow. Smith returned home to give a series of lectures at the University of Glasgow which were extremely well received. He was appointed Professor of Logic in 1751. Smith became a central figure in the Scottish Enlightenment, making firm friends with David Hume, amongst others. Smith published a series of minor philosophical works which were soon to be overshadowed by The Wealth of Nations . He travelled on the Continent and added to his already considerable reputation, not only as an economist, but also as a social theorist. The Wealth of Nations is indeed a work which transcends genres. It is a work of economic theory which nonetheless invades many other spheres of life, from philosophy to politics and social thought. It was well received at the time of publication and continues to be studied today: its breadth is such that it has weathered far better than many more modern economic texts. Smith died in Edinburgh on July 17th, 1790 and was immediately celebrated as one of the greatest minds of his era.

Famous Scots - Adam Smith (1723-1790)
Son of a customs officer who died before he was born, Adam Smith was raised in Kirkcaldy . Amongst his friends in Kirkcaldy were Robert Adam and his brothers who became famous architects. After attending grammar school there, Smith went to Glasgow University - at the age of 14 - to study maths plus natural and moral philosophy, afterwards going on to study at Oxford for seven years. He returned to Scotland and did some lecturing at Edinburgh University . This was so successful that he was appointed to the Chair of Logic at Glasgow University at the age of 28. He became professor of moral philosophy in the following year. Following a spell in Paris between 1764 and 1766 (where he met Voltaire and other philosophers) he returned to Kirkcaldy and spent the next ten years writing his great work "An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations" which was published in 1776. This was not only the first "modern" book on economics, it also advocated free trade as the way to increase wealth and as such, it was extremely influential. It was written in a clear, understandable style and had considerable influence on William Pitt the Younger who became Prime Minister in 1784. Smith was elected Lord Rector of Glasgow University in 1787. Much of Smith's later work was burnt after his death, at his request. The only major work to survive was The Theory of Moral Sentiments Return to the Index of Famous Scots
