The Joseph B. Slowinski Award for Excellence in Snake Systematics General Conditions of The Slowinski Award Because of a substantial contribution from Deutsche Bank (New York City), and the individual contributions by his many friends and colleagues (see below), this Award was established by the Board of Directors of The Center for North American Herpetology (CNAH) as a trust in perpetuity in recognition of the scientific achievements of the late Joseph B. Slowinski, whose life-long study on amphibian and reptile evolution, especially venomous snakes, was amply demonstrated in his extensive academic and popular writings, photography, and scholarship. Specifications of The Slowinski Award The Slowinski Award, shall be presented once each year provided a qualified recipient is identified. In the absence of a qualified recipient, no award will be given. The award may not be divided, but must be presented in full, to a single individual (in the case of multiple authors, the first author is automatically the recipient of the award). The recipient of The Slowinski Award will be chosen by a panel of at least three herpetologists, one of which will serve as chair, and which have been selected by the CNAH Board of Directors. These panelists are: Frank T. Burbrink (City University of New York, Staten Island), Brian I. Crother (Committee Chairperson, Southeastern Louisiana University, Hammond), and Robin Lawson (California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco). The charge to this panel is to select the most significant published contribution to snake systematics worldwide for the award year.

Marcia Slowinski I graduated from Berkeley in '64 with an Art degree, and in '65 my husband David, 2-year old son and I left for Medellin, Colombia which was home for David. (No, we were not drug dealers. David's family immigrated to Colombia from Russia in the 20's and started a woolen mill and a tannery.) David, a chemist, was headed to work in the family tannery. We bought a farm/ranch on the outskirts of Medellin which I ended up running for about 16 years until we moved into the city. It was a full and good life, varied, exciting and challenging, but the socio-economic climate began to change drastically in the early 80's with the rise of the drug culture. Everyone could see it coming, but it was not easy to get out, especially when it was HOME. After 28 years and much gnashing of teeth, I came to the US in May of '93 to resettle. I took classes in Court Interpreting at Monterey Institute of International Studies, and became certified in New Mexico in September of the same year. Two years ago I got my Federal Certification and at this point I have more work than I know what to do with. I love having put my Spanish to good use, and how Mr. Coleman and Ms. Dibert would be content to know that someone really did do something with their language after taking their classes. I owe them more than they will EVER know. David was finally able to sell/organize everything related to the business, and he joined me in early '96. He travels the globe as a freelance leather consultant. We love it here in the Gran Desierto Chihuahuense. We live in a rural area called Mesquite, 2 miles from the Rio Grande, about 12 miles from Las Cruces, NM and 35 miles from El Paso, TX.-1 mile off I-10, so C'mon over and see us, if you're in the neighborhood.
