The Brass Check
A Study of American Journalism
Upton Sinclair
Introduction by Robert W. McChesney and Ben Scott
In this systematic critique of the structural basis of U.S. mediaarguably the first one ever publishedUpton Sinclair writes that "American journalism is a class institution serving the rich and spurning the poor." Likening journalists to prostitutes, the title of the book refers to a chit that was issued to patrons of urban brothels of the era. Fueled by mounting disdain for newspapers run by business tycoons and conservative editors, Sinclair self-published The Brass Check in the years after The Jungle had made him a household name. Despite Sinclair's claim that this was his most important book, it was dismissed by critics and shunned by reviewers. Yet it sold over 150,000 copies and enjoyed numerous printings. A substantial introduction to this paperback edition by Robert W. McChesney and Ben Scott asserts the book's importance as a cornerstone critique of commercial journalism and a priceless resource for understanding the political turbulence of the Progressive Era. Upton Sinclair (1878-1968) was a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and social reformer who exposed the horrors of the Chicago meat-packing industry in The Jungle and revealed his socialist beliefs in such works as Metropolis

UPTON SINCLAIR
TLS: " Upton Sinclair Monrovia, California, 1960 November 8. To "Editor, 'Look'". In full: " I have just read, in your Nov.22 issue, MacKinlay Kantor's extraordinary article, 'If the South Had Won the Civil War.' Permit me to diasgree, and to explain that I know the subject, for before Mr. Kantor was born I studied the the (sic) Civil War collection at Princeton University Library, for my novel, 'Manassas,' published in 1903, and recently reissued under the title, 'Theirs Be the Guilt.' I read the original sources, the men who would have ruled if the South had won: Davis, Stephens, Toombs, Yancev, a dozen others I could name. I know their minds, and Mr. Kantor couldn't have been more wrong. They would have hung Abe Lincoln-'the slavehound of Illinois,' they called him. They would have made Maryland and Kentucky into slave states, and they would have done the same for everything west of Illinois to the Pacific. In five years they would have taken Mexico and Central America, and in another five they would have gone as far South as Brazil. To cultivate that vast region they would have restored the African slave trade, wholesale. They would have policed the North, and compelled the repeal of the Fugitive Slave Act, and made the hiding of a fugitive slave a hanging act.

American novelist, essayist, playwright, short story writer, and juvenile book writer, whose works reflects socialistic views. Sinclair stated in 1903 that "My Cause is the Cause of a man who has never yet been defeated, and whose whole being is one all devouring, God-given holy purpose" . Among Sinclair's most famous books is THE JUNGLE (1906), to which the public reacted so violently that it launched a government investigation into the meatpacking plants of Chicago, and changed the food laws of America. Today his work is not widely read, mostly because writers with political and social ideals are not popular in the West - or East. "The line of the buildings stood clear-cut and black against the sky; here and there out of the mass rose the great chimneys, with the river of smoke streaming away to the end of the world. It was a study in colours now, this smoke; in the sunset light it was black and brown and grey and purple. All the sordid questions of the place were gone - in the twilight it was a vision of power. To the two who stood watching while the darkness swallowed it up, it seemed a dream of wonder, with its tale of human energy, of things being done, of employment for thousands upon thousands of men, of opportunity and freedom, of life and love and joy. When they came away, arm in arm, Jurgis was saying, 'Tomorrow I shall go there and get a job!'"

Upton Sinclair
Upton Beall Sinclair, Jr. was born in Baltimore, Maryland on September 20th, 1878 to a poor family. His father sold liquor and was an alcoholic. The family moved to New York in 1888. In order to pay for his studies at New York City College, in 1893, he began writing, mostly for magazines. In 1897 he began Columbia University. Sinclair married for the first time in 1900. Using the unhappiness of his marriage as his muse, he wrote Springtime and Harvest in 1901. He joined the Socialist Party in 1902. In 1906, an assignment from a Socialist magazine led Sinclair to write what is, perhaps, his most popular and well-known novel, The Jungle . The book reported on the appalling conditions of the Chicago meatpacking industry and eventually led to the Pure Food and Drug Act ("For preventing the manufacture, sale, or transportation of adulterated or misbranded or poisonous or deleterious foods, drugs, medicines, and liquors, and for regulating traffic therein, and for other purposes.") Sinclair settled in Pasadena, California in 1915. His other works include

Sinclair, Upton Sinclair, Upton, , American novelist and socialist, b. Baltimore, grad. College of the City of New York, 1897. He was one of the muckrakers , and an interest in social and industrial reform underlies most of his writing. The Jungle (1906), a brutally graphic novel of the Chicago stockyards, aroused great public indignation and led to reform of federal food inspection laws. With the money from that novel, Sinclair established in 1906 his short-lived socialist community, Helicon Home Colony, at Englewood, N.J. Among Sinclair's other novels exposing social evils are King Coal Oil! Boston (on the Sacco-Vanzetti Case, 1928), and Little Steel (1938). In his social studies, such as The Brass Check (1919), on journalism, and The Goose-Step (1923), on education, he tried to uncover the harmful effects of capitalist economic pressure on institutions of learning and culture. An ardent socialist, Sinclair was in and out of the American Socialist party. In 1934 he was defeated as the Democratic candidate for governor of California.
