Chapters: Chapter 1 This was unfortunate, for already there was a throng before the door. The music had started up, and half a block away you could hear the dull "broom, broom" of a cello, with the squeaking of two fiddles which vied with each other in intricate and altitudinous gymnastics. Seeing the throng, Marija abandoned precipitately the debate concerning the ancestors of her coachman, and, springing from the moving carriage, plunged in and proceeded to clear a way to the hall. Once within, she turned and began to push the other way, roaring, meantime, "Eik! Eik! Uzdaryk-duris!" in tones which made the orchestral uproar sound like fairy music. "Z. Graiczunas, Pasilinksminimams darzas. Vynas. Sznapsas. Wines and Liquors. Union Headquarters"that was the way the signs ran. The reader, who perhaps has never held much converse in the language of far-off Lithuania, will be glad of the explanation that the place was the rear room of a saloon in that part of Chicago known as "back of the yards." This information is definite and suited to the matter of fact; but how pitifully inadequate it would have seemed to one who understood that it was also the supreme hour of ecstasy in the life of one of God's gentlest creatures, the scene of the wedding feast and the joy-transfiguration of little Ona Lukoszaite!

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Upton Beall Sinclair (1878-1968 ) American novelist, essayist, playwright, and short story writer, whose works reflect socialistic views. Upton Sinclair stated in 1903 that "My Cause is the Cause of a man who has never yet been defeated, and whose whole being is one all devouring, God-given holy purpose". Among Sinclair's most famous books is THE JUNGLE (1906). It launched a government investigation of the meatpacking plants of Chicago, and changed the food laws of America. Sinclair's works are still read, although writers with political and social ideals are not popular in the West - or East. "The line of the buildings stood clear-cut and black against the sky; here and there out of the mass rose the great chimneys, with the river of smoke streaming away to the end of the world. It was a study in colours now, this smoke; in the sunset light it was black and brown and grey and purple. All the sordid questions of the place were gone - in the twilight it was a vision of power. To the two who stood watching while the darkness swallowed it up, it seemed a dream of wonder, with its tale of human energy, of things being done, of employment for thousands upon thousands of men, of opportunity and freedom, of life and love and joy. When they came away, arm in arm, Jurgis was saying, 'Tomorrow I shall go there and get a job!'" (from The Jungle Upton Sinclair was born in Baltimore, Maryland. His family came from the ruined Southern aristocracy. His father, Upton Beall Sinclair, was a liquor salesman and an alcoholic - he drank himself to death. Priscilla Harden, Sinclair's mother, came from a relatively wealthy family - one of her sisters was married to a millionaire. She hated alcohol and did not even drink coffee or tea. When Sinclair was ten, the family moved to New York. His father sold hats and spent his evenings in bars. Later Sinclair said: "...as far back as I can remember, my life was a series of Cinderella transformations; one night I would be sleeping on a vermin-ridden sofa in a lodging house, and the next night under silken coverlets in a fashionable home. It all depended on whether my father had the money for that week's board."

Upton Beall Sinclair (1878-1968)
Born in Baltimore, Maryland. USA, 20 th September, 1878, died 25 th Nov. 25, 1968, is as famous for his social concern as for his many novels. His first well-known novel, the Jungle , exposed the appalling conditions in the Chicago stockyards and influenced passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act. Sinclair subsequently tried and failed to exercise his socialism in a cooperative colony, in Arden Delaware but he persisted as a muckraker. Upton Sinclair was an avowed socialist. Fearful that the public would not wait for the socialist dream to be realized in America, Sinclair switched to the Democratic party. There is no excuse for poverty in a state as rich as California. We can produce so much food that we have to dump it into our bay. After his defeat Upton Sinclair launched a new and highly successful writing career. In 1940, at the age of 62, he published World's End . His novel Dragon's Teeth (1942), about Hitler's rise to power, won the 1943 Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it. I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach. The remedy [for the Great Depression] is to give the workers access to the means of production, and let them produce for themselves, not for others, . . . the American way. I am sustained by a sense of the worthwhileness of what I am doing; a trust in the good faith of the process which created and sustains me. That process I call God.

Classroom Issues and Strategies
Students generally respond to Sinclair's portrait of the unsanitary conditions in the meat-packing industry. They tend to be interested in the history of The Jungle how it was written, the federal legislation that was passed because of the public reaction to it, etc. The most difficult problem in teaching The Jungle is how to approach a text in which literary qualities are subordinated to political purpose. The Jungle does not lend itself to the kinds of literary discussions that most of us are accustomed to. Its literary shortcomings are obvious. One way to begin discussing The Jungle would be to approach it as a political novel. Work with your students to define the genre of the political novel. Compare The Jungle to other political novels the students might have read. Discuss the criteria by which we evaluateor should evaluatea political novel. Should our criteria include social and/or political considerations? (It might be useful here to draw a parallel between a political novel and a postmodern novel, for example, in which ideas overshadow the other ingredients of the fiction.)

, novelist and social reformer. Sinclair is best known for his muckraking novel The Jungle , which exposed conditions in the meatpacking industry in Chicago. Outrage fueled by the book led to reform legislation such as the Pure Food and Drug Acts . In 1934 he was narrowly defeated in his bid for governor of California as a Democrat with the slogan "EPIC—End Poverty in California." Sinclair helped establish the American Civil Liberties Union in the state. In 1940 he launched a series of eleven novels about Lanny Budd. The third, Dragon's Teeth , about Hitler's rise to power, won the 1943 Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

Search all of Upton Sinclair Upton Sinclair (1878-1968) , was an American novelist, essayist, playwright, and short story writer, whose most famous book is The Jungle
Sinclair was born on September 20, 1878 in Baltimore, Maryland. His family came from the ruined Southern aristocracy. His father was a liquor salesman whose alcoholism shadowed Sinclair's childhood. When Sinclair was ten, the family moved to New York. He started to write dime novels at the age of 15 and produced ethnic jokes and hack fiction for pulp magazines to finance his studies at New York City College. In 1897 he enrolled Columbia University, determined to succeed while producing one poorly paid novelette per week. During these years he wrote stories for various boys' weeklies.
In 1900 Sinclair married his first wife (they divorced in 1911). The unhappy marriage led to the writing of Springtime And Harvest (1901). By 1904 Sinclair was moving toward realistic fiction. As a writer Sinclair gained fame in 1906 with the novel The Jungle , a report on the dirty conditions in the Chicago meatpacking industry. The book won Sinclair fame and fortune, and led to the implementation of the Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906. Its proceeds enabled Sinclair to establish and support the socialist commune Helicon Home Colony in Englewood, N.J. However, this commune for left-wing writers burnt down after a year.
