Henryk Sienkiewicz
© eMe Textos:

An excessive preponderance of an idealistic mood is harmful to society: it creates daydreaming, political Don Quixotism, hope for heavenly intervention. This is an undeniable truthbut it is also true that every extreme is harmful. Every novelist should write something for children at least once in his lifetime. Generally speaking, all the people of the so-called upper classes do not live a true, real life. Below us something always happens, there is the struggle for life, for bread, a life full of diligent work, animal necessities, appetites, passions, everyday efforts,a palpable life, which roars, leaps, and tumbles like ocean waves, and we are sitting eternally on terraces, discussing art, literature, love, women; strangers to that other life far removed from it, obliterating, out of the seven, the six work-days. Without being conscious of it, our inclinations, nerves, and soul are fit only for holidays. Immersed into blissful dilettantism as in a warm bath, we are half awake, half dreaming. Consuming leisurely our wealth, and our inherited supply of nerves and muscles, we gradually lose our foothold upon the soil. I die too soon.

I have written this Home Page hoping that someone who reads it will find the information, about some members of my family, interesting. I have discovered that the lives of some of them were extraordinary. Some of them became famous and very influential: Tomasz Mineyko Zygmunt Mineyko Henryk Sienkiewicz Georgios Papandreou ... Ksawery Puslowski (1906-1998), others remained unknown. However, all of them had very interesting lives that became evident to me when I had the opportunity to learn more about them. For example, who would have thought that Andreas Papandreou who was the Prime Minister of Greece for many years and led the political fight against Turkey, might have anything in common with the leaders of the battle of Vienna (between the united forces of Europe and the Ottoman Empire on September 12, 1683). His uncle prince Stanislaw Jablonowski was a direct descendent of general Stanislaw Jablonowski who led the Polish infantry and cavalry in this battle. The general Jablonowski was the second leader of united forces after monarch Jan III Sobieski. His other uncle, count Karol Ludwik Potocki, was a descendent of another general who took part in the same battle. Who would have thought that

Henryk Sienkiewicz Regarded as "The Patriot Novelist of Poland", a Nobel Prize winner, Henryk Sienkiewicz is perhaps best known for his epic historical novel Quo Vadis, which depicts early Christianity and the persecutions. Raised during the era of Poland's partitions and the cultural oppression of the nations surrounding this vulnerable land, Sienkiewicz attempted to fan the coals of patriotism among his countrymen. It has been reported that Poles would pin pages of Sienkiewicz's books to their clothing as reminders of their struggle for freedom. Sienkiewicz pleaded on behalf of his oppressed compatriots by addressing open letters to the governments and prominent men of Europe, protesting against the acts of injustice which victimized his nation. Notably, in 1901, he exposed the persecution of Polish school children at the hands of the Prussian government. Throughout his lifetime, Sienkiewicz sought to prepare his nation's people to be citizens of a reborn country to which he pointed the way, but did not live to see. Two years after his death, Poland's boundaries were restored and once again assured her rightful place in the roster of nations. Among Sienkiewicz's other major literary works are: The Trilogy, (composed of three historical novels set in the 17th Century known as With Fire and Sword, The Deluge, Fire in the Steppe), The Teutonic Knights, In Desert and Wilderness and After Bread, Letters From America. These last works were inspired by Siekiewicz's trip to America.

Henryk Sienkiewicz (1846-1916), the most outstanding and prolific Polish writer of the second half of the nineteenth century, was born in Wola Okrzejska, in the Russian part of Poland. His father's family was actively engaged in the revolutionary struggles for Polish independence, which accounts for the strong patriotic element in Sienkiewicz' work. Historical scholarship on the other hand ran in his mother's family.
Sienkiewicz studied in Warsaw, but without any visible results. His talent as a writer was soon discovered. His early works are satirical sketches, betraying a strong social conscience. He made a trip to America in 1876 and travelled as far as California. His impressions were published in Polish newspapers and received very favourably. His travels provided him with material for several works, among them the brilliant short story Latarnik The Lighthouse Keeper
After his return to Poland, Sienkiewicz devoted himself to historical studies, the result of which was his great trilogy about Poland in the midseventeenth century. Ogniem i mieczem With Fire and Sword Potop The Deluge ] and Pan Wolodyjowski Pan Michael ] were published in 1884, 1886, and 1888 respectively. The historical novels were followed by works on contemporary subjects:
