Sir Philip Sidney (1554-1586)
Source: Hazard Adams, ed., Critical Theory Since Plato (Fort Worth: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1992), pp. 142-162 Main points from Adams's Introduction:
  • picture of Renaissance critical attitudes
  • sources in Plato, Aristotle, Horace, Castelvetro, Scaliger; Apology for Poetry was response to attack by puritan Stephen Gosson in School of Abuse, main complaints: that poetry is waste of time, 'mother of lies' (Plato's idea), 'nurse of abuse', teaches sinful things, banished by Plato from republic;
  • points of Sidney: poetry as education in early societies, moral influence, poet revered by all; poet teaches and delights by use of allegory and offers visions of better things (idea of Aristotelian influence: poetry completing the incomplete in nature); neo-Platonic aspect, vision of higher reality in poetic images; poet as creator of a second nature, anticipation of Romantic concept of poetic imagination; poet improves on appearances; Sidney: poetry does not lie because it never affirms (p. 142).
Apologie for Poetrie (1583/1595)
"I have just cause to make a pitiful defense of poor Poetry, which from almost the highest estimation of learning is fallen to be the laughinstock of children";

To Sleep

Come, Sleep, O Sleep, the certain knot of peace,
The baiting-place of wit, the balm of woe,
The poor man's wealth, the prisoner's release,
The indifferent judge between the high and low;
With shield of proof shield me from out the press
Of those fierce darts Despair at me doth throw:
O make in me those civil wars to cease;
I will good tribute pay, if thou do so. Take thou of me smooth pillows, sweetest bed, A chamber deaf to noise and blind to light, A rosy garland and a weary head; And if these things, as being thine by right, Move not thy heavy grace, thou shalt in me, Livelier than elsewhere, Stella's image see. Criticism
Fall, 1999 by Elizabeth Mazzola
I have to fill a double space. I have to be my brother as well as myself. Henry James(1) Now I, now I my self forgotten find, Even like a dead man, dreamed out of mind. Philip Sidney, Psalm 31 "In Te, Domine, Speravi' Introduction 1. Family Centers and Interior Designs Henry's description of a son whose loving "exceldyth" his own provides Robert with an image to copy (indeed, "the very formular"), yet the unnamed Philip appears less an additional source of comfort than a rival to the "blundering" elder Sidney. Father to all "Gentlymen," this child's example condemns others to hollow rhetoric; as Henry concludes: "Ons agayn I say Imytate hym." It is not only Henry Sidney whom Philip silences. Very little has been written about Robert (1563-1626), husband, father, soldier, patron, and little-known Renaissance poet.(9) If much more information has been assembled about Robert's sister Mary, the Countess of Pembroke (1561-1621), a greater part of what we know about the English Renaissance reveals something about their brother Philip (1554-1586). But I want to demonstrate in the first part of this essay that the fortunes and dimensions of the Sidney family can also tell us something about the Renaissance in England. In the second part, I turn to the fortunes and dimensions of Philip Sidney's shadowy image, so useful because it was so unwieldy.

Sidney, Philip

See Silver Poets of the Sixteenth Century , Everyman, 1947. See also Syr P. S. His Astrophel and Stella [1591], STC number 22538, for a number of changes restoring the Elizabethan grammar and punctuation. It was deemed not worth while to simply reproduce the 1591 edition, as it contains too many errors and omissions to represent Sidney's work adequately. Sir Philip Sidney
English poet, courtier, patron of poets and scholars. One of the great literary figures of Elizabethan England, his heroic prose romance, the Arcadia (1580, revised 1584) was the most important work of prose fiction in sixteenth-century England. He wrote the first great Elizabethan sonnet cycles, Astrophil and Stella (1582), a sequence of one hundred and eight sonnets and eleven songs which explore the mind of the lover. His Defense of Poesie (1589) was the finest work of Elizabethan literary criticism. His successful experiments and technique influenced many other Renaissance poets like Spenser, Campion, Drayton and Jonson.

It is impossible to tell how much of the monument which Sidney's contemporaries constructed to him is based in reality, but the Queen is said to have described him as "the most accomplished gentleman in Europe," and the commoners at his funeral shouted, "Farewell, the worthiest knight that lived," and as C. S. Lewis put it, "Even at this distance, Sidney is dazzling." top of page SELECTED WORKS BY THIS AUTHOR An Apology For Poetry (Or The Defence Of Poesy): Revised and Expanded Second Edition by R.W. This world uncertain is:
Fond are life's lustful joys;
Death proves them all but toys.
None from his darts can fly;
I am sick, I must die.
Lord, have mercy on us.
Rich men, trust not in wealth:
Gold cannot buy you health;
Physic himself must fade.
All things to end are made; The plague full swift goes by. I am sick, I must die. Lord, have mercy on us. Beauty is but a flower Which wrinkles will devour; Brightness falls from the air; Queens have died young and fair; Dust hath close Helen's eye. I am sick, I must die. Lord, have mercy on us. Strength stoops unto the grave; Worms feed on Hector brave. Swords may not fight with fate; Earth still holds ope her gate. Come, come, the bells do cry. I am sick, I must die. Lord have mercy on us. Wit and wantonness Tasteth death's bitterness;
