Born in Lancaster, Ohio, he was the son of a judge of the supreme court. However, his father died suddenly in 1829, leaving his widow with a family of young children to raise. William Sherman was then adopted by a family friend, Thomas Ewing, a politician.
Sherman attended West Point military college, where he did very well, and was appointed second lieutenant on graduating. He then fought in Florida against the Seminole Native American Indians and later in the Mexican War.
In 1853 he resigned from the military and spent some years in banking in California before going into business for a short time in New York. He then practiced law in Leavenworth, Kansas, before becoming superintendent of the new Louisiana military college in January 1861. When it became clear that Louisiana would secede from the Union he resigned from his post.
Sherman had a great love of the south and was greatly distressed by the prospect of civil war. His brother, John, loined the Confederates but William was loyal to the Union cause. He turned down the offer of a commission in the Confederate army and offered his services to the Union.

American General
The following is from a speech given to the Lotos Club in New York City on January 11, 1908, by Robert Stuart MacArthur: "You will recall the fact that a few years ago Charles Dickens the younger came to this city and gave readings from his father's books. Those readings were to be given in Chickering Hall. I went early; I had a seat on the platform. General Sherman, who then had his home in New York, came in and took a seat beside me. I had with me my little daughter, and I was very anxious that she should know General Sherman, so I took the liberty of presenting her to the great general. He said, 'I am so glad to have an opportunity to hear Charles Dickens, Junior. I owe and I think this remark has never been put into print; some day I propose to write it out I owe a debt of gratitude to his father, Charles Dickens, which I shall never be able to pay. During my march to the sea, after many of my greatest battles, I went into my tent, I took up David Copperfield, Martin Chuzzlewit, A Tale of Two Cities

As a result of his successful campaign in Georgia, the Confederacy was split in two and deprived of much needed supplies, ending the war quickly with a Union victory. Born on February 8, 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, his father died when he was young. Widowed and unable to care for the entire family, his mother sent brother Thomas to be raised by an aunt and William became a foster child to Thomas Ewing, his father's friend. During the Mexican War, Sherman was posted in San Francisco. He resigned his commission in 1853 to become a partner in a bank there. Prior to the outbreak of hostilities between the North and the South, William Tecumseh Sherman was Superintendent of the Louisiana State Seminary and Military Academy at Alexandria, Louisiana. After the war, the school moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana and became Louisiana State University (LSU). Talk of the secession from the Union was rampant, yet the motto of the seminary was "By the liberality of the General Government of the United States, the Union - esto perpetua." On January 18, 1861, Sherman resigned his position stating that he preferred to maintain his allegiance to the Constitution as long as a fragment of it survived. On the 25th of February, Sherman left Louisiana and returned to Ohio. He remained in Lancaster for a month and then moved his family to St. Louis, Missouri where he was elected President of the Fifth Street Railroad.

William Tecumseh Sherman (February 8, 1820 - 1891) was an American soldier, businessman, and writer general in the American Civil War, best known for his capture of Atlanta, Georgia, and his March to the Sea (from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia). He was born in Lancaster, Ohio. He was the older brother of John Sherman, the Senator who sponsored the Sherman Antitrust Act. Sherman's father, Judge Charles Sherman, died when Tecumseh was nine years old. The boy was informally "adopted" by a Lancaster neighbor, attorney Thomas Ewing, who served as a U.S. Senator from Ohio and as U.S. Secretary of the Interior. Ewing secured Sherman's apppointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, from which he graduated sixth in his class of 1840. He entered the army as a second lieutenant and served through the end of the Mexican American War, during which he was stationed in California. He resigned his military commission and became president of a bank in San Francisco. The bank failed in a financial panic in 1857. Sherman accept a job offered to him by two of his Southern army friends, P.G.T. Beauregard and Braxton Bragg, as the first president of Louisiana Military Seminary. He served in that post until the start of the American Civil War, when he resigned and went back north.
