Biography Sherman's troops stripped barns, fields, and houses, tore up railroad tracks and burned vast stretches of farmland. Sherman was a leading Union general in the American Civil War and commanding general of the United States Army. During the Civil War, he became famous for his "marches" across Georgia and the Carolinas. On these marches, Sherman's troops stripped barns, fields, and houses, tore up railroad tracks and burned vast stretches of farmland. The intent was to devastate soldiers' and civilians' lives alike shortening the war and restoring the nation. Sherman would bring the same military philosophy to the conflicts in the West. As commander of the Missouri district, Sherman directed a policy designed to ensure Army control over Indian affairs. His strategy included the extermination of the buffalo, animals that were central to the religion, culture and sustenance of the Plains Indians. For Sherman, the buffalo, like the native people themselves, were impediments to building the transcontinental railroad. He invited all the sportsmen of England and America to participate in a Great Buffalo Hunt and "make a grand sweep of them all." In 1867, Sherman was appointed to the Indian Peace Commission, where he took part in the negotiations with Indian leaders that produced the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868.

Biographical/Historical Sketch
Though William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) never commanded in a major Union victory he remains one of the best known of the Northern commanders. His father died when he was nine years old, and Sherman was raised by Senator Thomas Ewing and eventually married into the family. Through the influence of his patron, he obtained an appointment to West Point. Only five cadets of the class of 1840 graduated ahead of him, and he was appointed to the artillery. He received a brevet for his services in California during the Mexican War but resigned in 1853 as captain and commissary officer.

Boynton: Sherman's Historical Raid: The Memoirs in the Light of the Record General William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891); photo courtesy Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. One of the most infamous military leaders of the Civil War, General William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) is possibly best known for his 1864 "March to the Sea" during which he led his troops from the newly captured Atlanta to Savannah on the Atlantic coast. On the way, he decimated the surrounding countryside, effectively destroying the South's ability to continue the war. Sherman's military strategies are considered to be forerunners of modern warfare.
In 1875, Sherman wrote his autobiography, published by Appleton as a two-volume set and including a map of his Civil War marches. Shortly after its publication, Henry Boynton, a reporter for the Cincinnati Gazette , published a critical refutation of much of Sherman's account. Using War Office records, Boynton methodically detailed discrepancies in the Sherman book. He even went so far as to use a binding nearly identical to Sherman's. Both of the books, shown below, are first editions.

http://www.indiansgr.com/chiefs/Gen_William_Tecumseh_Sherman_en.htm
William Tecumseh Sherman
Most famous for his scorched-earth tactics in the Civil War, General William Tecumseh Sherman brought that same military philosophy to the West, where he shaped a policy and strategy that would finally subjugate all the native peoples of the plains. Sherman was born in Ohio in 1820 and named after the Shawnee chief Tecumseh, who had tried unsuccessfully in the first decade of the nineteenth century to unite the tribes of the Ohio River Valley against American intrusions on their land. When his father died in 1829, Sherman was raised by a family friend. After graduating sixth in his class from West Point in 1840, Sherman served in South Carolina and Georgia, but saw very little action in the Mexican-American war. He resigned from the Army in 1853 to pursue a career in banking, then a career as a lawyer, but with little success. The Civil War brought him back to active service in 1861, and brought him lasting fame (or infamy) for his "march to the sea," on which he cut a swathe through the heart of the Confederacy, burning Atlanta and laying waste to vast stretches of farmland. At the conclusion of the Civil War, Sherman was appointed commander of the Missouri district, which stretched from the Rocky Mountains to the Mississippi. Here he deployed troops to protect transcontinental railroad workers from Indians who feared that the railroad would mean further encroachment on their territory. He also established military outposts across the region, expanding the network of federal authority.

The Author/Maker Keyword search has a special function. For archival, library, manuscript or audiovisual material, it will return information on authors, agencies, editors or other people or companies related to making and/or collecting of the material. For museum objects, the search will return information about owners, manufacturers, makers, collectors and/or other people historically related to the objects. The search performs these functions simultaneously so you may receive records that are not always what you would expect. For example, a search on the Archives/Library collection may bring back museum records as well. This is not by accident. Sherman Monument, 1892-1903
William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) was born in Lancaster, Ohio. In 1840 he graduated from West Point and in 1850 married Ellen Ewing. Sherman was made general of the army in 1869 when Ulysses Grant was inaugurated president. Along with Grant and Robert E. Lee, Sherman is one of the most renowned generals of the Civil War. He retired from active service in 1883 and moved to New York in 1886. Saint-Gaudens modeled a bust of the general in 1888. This bust served as a study for the 1903 equestrian monument to the Civil War leader. Work on the Sherman Monument was begun in 1892 in Saint-Gaudens’ New York studio, continued in Paris, and was finished in Cornish, NH, in 1901. The bronze was cast by Thiebault Brothers in Paris. The setting and pedestal were designed by architect Charles McKim . The monument was unveiled on May 30, 1903, at the entrance to New York’s Central Park. (continued)
