William T. Sherman Stamp On June 29,1995, the U.S. Post Office issued a set of 20 commemorative stamps showing 16 individuals and 4 battles of the Civil War. Official first day of issue ceremonies were held in front of the Cyclorama Center at the Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania. A pictorial cancellation showing a Civil War cannon was available at the ceremony. However, as the Postal Service also released the set of stamps nationwide, numerous unofficial first day of issue cancellations were possible. One of the stamps shows Union Gen. William T. Sherman standing with a pair of field glasses and marching troops in the background. Presumably, the scene portrays Sherman during his Atlanta Campaign or the following March to the Sea. On the back of the stamp is the notation:
    Union Major General
    William Tecumseh Sherman
    Blunt, grizzled strategist
    distinguished himself at Shi-

    Negotiated lenient peace.

Customer Reviews Having read several books concerning Shermans March, it is my opinion, this is one of the best. Burke Davis is one of the few talented authors that can make the reader feel sympathetic for one side, then for the other. Burke Davis uses words like a great artist painting a picture. You can find yourself feeling pity for the Southern women and children, and the next chapter Burke Davis makes you feel sympathetic for Shermans soldiers. In the closing chapters, you'll probably be admiring Sherman as he marches his soldiers in the Grand review. ( and you may not like Sec. of War Edwin M. Stanton as much, when Stanton attempts to defame Sherman)This is one awesome book.I also recomend,"Shermans March through the Carolinas"-John G. Barrett, and "When Sherman Marched North From The Sea"-Jacqueline Glass Campbell. Look for related books on other categories Military - General Sherman, William T
