Address by William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) Presented in Salem, Illinois, on July 4, 1866
Researched by James R. Heintze. American University, Washington, D.C.
Editor's note: General William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) fought in the Civil War for the Union and is perhaps best remembered for his invasion of Georgia when he captured Atlanta (September 1864) and commenced his "March to the Sea," finally taking Savannah (December). Sherman's army of 60,000 men pillaged and destroyed everything within a 60-mile wide swath of land, 300 miles in length. Although the march was largely unopposed and helped bring the war to a close, the general's tactics were loathed by many. The significance of Sherman's speech below is the explanation he gives as to why he felt compelled to adopt this military tactic. Notice Sherman's comment, "I know there are parties that denounce me as inhuman," voiced before this mostly friendly crowd. Perhaps he was concerned about his legacy in history, given the disfavor of his name in the South, and that this speech was more of an address to the nation than just the residents of Salem. Approximately 25,000 persons were there to hear his speech which he presented on a wooden platform having a backdrop of "tattered battle-flags of various Illinois regiments and mottoes complimentary to General Sherman, Governor Oglesby, and General Logan." In addition, Col. E., N. Bates, of Centralia, read the Declaration of Independence and General John Alexander Logan (1826-1886), Union general and U.S. senator, also gave a speech that day.

Four passages from various parts of the book: You cannot qualify war in harsher terms than I will. War is cruelty, and you cannot refine it; and those who brought war into our country deserve all the curses and maledictions a people can pour out. I know I had no hand in making this war, and I know I will make more sacrifices to-day than any of you to secure peace. But you cannot have peace and a division of our country. Five passages from various parts of the book: Another ten years have passed since I ventured to publish my Memoirs, and, being once more at leisure, I have revised them in the light of the many criticisms public and private. My habit has been to note in pencil the suggestions of critics, and to examine the substance of their differences; for critics must differ from the author, to manifest their superiority. Stanton was never again elected to any public office, and was commonly spoken of as "the late Mr. Stanton." He is now dead, and I doubt not in life he often regretted his mistake in attempting to gain popular fame by abusing the army-leaders, then as now an easy and favorite mode of gaining notoriety, if not popularity. Of course, subsequent events gave General Grant and most of the other actors in that battle their appropriate place in history, but the danger of sudden popular clamors is well illustrated by this case.

SHERMAN, WILLIAM TECUMSEH (1820-1891). William Tecumseh Sherman, United States Army officer, was born in Lancaster, Ohio, on February 8, 1820, the son of Charles Robert and Mary (Hoyt) Sherman. His father was a justice of the Ohio Supreme Court. With the death of the elder Sherman in 1829, William became the ward of Senator Thomas Ewing, secretary of the treasury in the William Henry Harrison and John Tyler administrations and secretary of the interior in the Zachary Taylor qv administration. With Ewing's influence, Sherman was appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point on July 1, 1836; he graduated sixth in his class and received a commission as a second lieutenant in the Third Artillery in Florida on July 1, 1840. On November 30, 1840, he was promoted to first lieutenant. During the Mexican War qv he was avid to be stationed in Texas, where he pledged "most heartily . . . [to] give all the aid I can to further the views of the Government to extend the `Area of Freedom,'" but was sent instead to California, where he received a brevet promotion to captain on May 30, 1848. After the war he served as adjutant general of the Division of the Pacific, and on May 1, 1850, after an engagement of seven years, he married the daughter of his guardian, the socially prominent Eleanor Boyle Ewing; the couple had eight children. On September 6, 1853, Sherman resigned from the army to pursue the banking business in San Francisco. The firm for which he worked failed in 1857, however, and he turned first to the practice of law in Leavenworth, Kansas, and after experiencing failure there in 1859 to the superintendency of the Louisiana Seminary of Learning and Military Academy in Pineville (now Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge).

William Tecumseh Sherman Family Papers - Microfilm (MSHR)
INTRODUCTION
This guide and the accompanying fifteen rolls of microfilm are being published by the University of Notre Dame Archives under the sponsorship of the National Historical Publications Commission. In the task of preparing the Sherman Family Papers for microfilming the information acquired at the February, 1966, and May, 1967, meetings at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., of representatives from institutions preparing microfilm publications under grants from the Commission has been invaluable. A debt of gratitude is owed to Dr. Oliver W. Holmes, to the National Historical Publications Commissions, and especially to Mr. Fred Shelley of that Commission for his wise counsel and encouragement. WILLIAM TECUMSEH SHERMAN (1820-1891)
William Tecumseh Sherman, one of the most prominent of the Union's Civil War generals and for many years thereafter Commanding General of the Army, was born at Lancaster, Ohio, on Feb. 8, 1820, the third son and sixth child of Charles Robert and Mary Hoyt Sherman. His father, a noted Ohio lawyer and judge, had been born and educated at Norwalk, Connecticut. Admitted to the Connecticut bar before he turned twenty-one, Charles Sherman practiced law at Bridgeport for a year. Shortly after his marriage on May 8, 1810, to Mary Hoyt, the daughter of Isaac and Mary Raymond Hoyt of Norwalk, he set out to seek his fortune in Ohio, then a wilderness menaced by hostile Indians. After finally deciding upon Lancaster for his permanent residence, he returned Norwalk for his wife and infant son, Charles. The couple eventually had eleven children.

Our History Vision 2000 Board of Trustees Press Releases ... RESTART OCC What type of search is the Archives/Library Subject Keyword Search? This search is a keyword search. Keyword searches compare a word or set of words against information in OCC database. The name of each search will tell you what types of information the search will use. For instance, a Title keyword search on "Riders" or "Sage" will bring back "Riders of the Purple Sage" as well as any other title that contain "Riders," "Sage" or both. These types of searches work best when you know partly what you want but not all, such as a few words of the title of a painting. Keyword searches are also useful when you are unsure of what OHS hold in a particular area. What will the Archives/Library Subject Keyword Search do? The Archives/Library Subject Keyword Search will check your text against a list of approved subject headings. You need not worry about entering the exact heading. The system has the ability to connect your heading with the ones the Archives/Library uses. You will notice these listed as "See" references. Use your influence to reestablish system, order, government. You may rest easy that no military commander is going to neglect internal safety, or to guard against external danger; but to do right requires time, and more patience than I usually possess. If I find the press of Memphis actuated by high principle and a sole devotion to their country, I will be their best friend; but, if I find them personal, abusive, dealing in innuendoes and hints at a blind venture, and looking to their own selfish aggrandizement and fame, then they had better look out; for I regard such persons as greater enemies to their country and to mankind than the men who, from a mistaken sense of State pride, have taken up muskets, and fight us about as hard as we care about. In haste, but in kindness, yours, etc.

During the early 1920's between one and two dozen Osage Indians were murdered or simply "disappeared" from their oil-rich lands in northeastern Oklahoma. As wards of the federal government, their special status brought investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation who met fear and suspicion from the Osage and friendly whites alike. Despite the difficulties, the FBI, under the young director J. Edgar Hoover, avidly pursued the murderers and eventually secured life-term convictions in what became one of its most celebrated cases. Compelling source material can be found here concerning the Osage people, Oklahoma, early 20th century politics and law enforcement.
