Sherman, William Tecumseh Sherman, William Tecumseh (1820-1891), United States general in the American Civil War (1861-1865). Sherman is remembered for his campaign in Georgia and the Carolinas in which the Northern troops devastated the Southern landscape and resources. After three months of fighting, Sherman reached Raleigh, North Carolina, and was prepared to continue north to Virginia. However, the war came to an end. Following the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee to Grant on April 9, the Confederate army confronting Sherman surrendered to him at Durham Station on April 26, 1865. After the war Sherman was commissioned lieutenant general in the regular army and, following Grant’s election to the presidency, he was promoted to the rank of full general on March 4, 1869 and given command of the entire U.S. Army. He published his

William Tecumseh Sherman, United States Army officer, was born in Lancaster, Ohio, on February 8, 1820, the son of Charles Robert and Mary (Hoyt) Sherman. His father was a justice of the Ohio Supreme Court. With the death of the elder Sherman in 1829, William became the ward of Senator Thomas Ewing, secretary of the treasury in the William Henry Harrison and John Tyler administrations and secretary of the interior in the Zachary Taylor administration. With Ewing's influence, Sherman was appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point on July 1, 1836; he graduated sixth in his class and received a commission as a second lieutenant in the Third Artillery in Florida on July 1, 1840. On November 30, 1840, he was promoted to first lieutenant. During the Mexican War he was avid to be stationed in Texas, where he pledged "most heartily . . . [to] give all the aid I can to further the views of the Government to extend the `Area of Freedom,'" but was sent instead to California, where he received a brevet promotion to captain on May 30, 1848. After the war he served as adjutant general of the Division of the Pacific, and on May 1, 1850, after an engagement of seven years, he married the daughter of his guardian, the socially prominent Eleanor Boyle Ewing; the couple had eight children. On September 6, 1853, Sherman resigned from the army to pursue the banking business in San Francisco. The firm for which he worked failed in 1857, however, and he turned first to the practice of law in Leavenworth, Kansas, and after experiencing failure there in 1859 to the superintendency of the Louisiana Seminary of Learning and Military Academy in Pineville (now Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge).

Sherman's admirers rate him perhaps the outstanding Federal commander of the Civil War. His masterly marches of 1864-65 carried Union forces a thousand miles, from Chattanooga through Georgia and the Carolinas to the southern reaches of Lee's Virginiacampaigns of maneuver that doomed the main Confederate army around Richmond and hastened the collapse of the rebellion.
The son of a jurist, prominent in his home state, he was orphaned at the age of nine and raised by a well-to-do friend of his parents', Thomas Ewing. He received his early education at a local academy, entered West Point in 1836, and graduated four years later, a solid sixth in his class.
Entering the army as an artillery second lieutenant, Sherman saw service in Florida and in California during the Mexican War. Garrison and survey duty in South Carolina and Georgia provided unwitting preparation for his later career, when his troops would credit him with a virtually encyclopedic knowledge of every road, path and byway in the two rebel states.
For the most part, though army life dull and unchallenging. Bored and frustrated by the slow pace of promotion, he resigned in 1853 to become a banker. Like many soldiers of his era, he knew little success in Civil life. He failed at banking, then turned to the law. He lost his only case.

William Tecumseh Sherman had a lot in common with Ulysses S. Grant . Like Grant, he was born in Ohio. Like Grant, he graduated from the military academy at West Point. Like Grant, he failed as a businessman. Like Grant, he was criticized as an incompetent officer. And like Grant, he became a fierce, uncompromising warrior who helped batter the Confederates into submission during the Civil War. In fact, Sherman spent much of his life providing evidence to support his most famous statement: "War is hell." Sherman was born in Ohio in 1820. When he was just nine, his father died, and he was sent to be raised by a family friend. Sherman graduated from West Point in 1840. He saw his first action in the U.S. war against the Seminole Indians in Florida. During the Mexican War , he served in California and did not see battle. In 1853 Sherman resigned from the Army and traveled to San Francisco, which was then a gold boom town . There, he began work as a banker, but the Panic of 1857 put an end to his banking career. He served briefly as the head of a military academy in Louisiana, but when the Civil War broke out, he joined the U.S. Army as a colonel. Sherman fought at the First Battle of Bull Run, Virginia, in which Union troops were beaten badly by the Confederate Army. Sent to Kentucky to command troops there, he did poorly. His numerous requests for reinforcements and his generally nervous behavior caused some newspapers to describe him as insane. But with the support of a new commander, Ulysses S. Grant, Sherman found confidence.

William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) was born in Lancaster, Ohio. In 1840 he graduated from West Point and in 1850 married Ellen Ewing. Sherman was made general of the army in 1869 when Ulysses Grant was inaugurated president. Along with Grant and Robert E. Lee, Sherman is one of the most renowned generals of the Civil War. He retired from active service in 1883 and moved to New York in 1886. Saint-Gaudens modeled a bust of the general in 1888. This bust served as a study for the 1903 equestrian monument to the Civil War leader. Work on the Sherman Monument was begun in 1892 in Saint-Gaudens’ New York studio, continued in Paris, and was finished in Cornish, NH, in 1901. The bronze was cast by Thiebault Brothers in Paris. The setting and pedestal were designed by architect Charles McKim . The monument was unveiled on May 30, 1903, at the entrance to New York’s Central Park. (continued)
