Sheridan, Richard Brinsley

Thomas Gainsborough
Thomas Gainsborough is an English landscape and portrait painter, one of the great English masters. He was born in Sudbury, Suffolk in the family of a clothier. He showed an aptitude for drawing early and first was encouraged by his mother, who was a woman of well-cultivated mind and excelled in flower-painting. He used to spend a lot of time outdoors, drawing. In 1740, at the age of 13 he was sent to London to study art. He spent several years working in the studios of different artists, one of whom was Hubert Gravelot, a draughtsman and engraver, another one was a scene-painter and illustrator Francis Hayman. In 1748 Gainsborough presented The Charterhouse (1748) to the Foundling Hospital, it was a way for the artist to show one of his works, because at that time there were no other possibilities for young artists. In 1746 Gainsborough married Margaret Burr He first did not have many commissions there and had a lot of time to indulge in his favorite pursuit: to draw landscapes. Also he created many beautiful pictures of his wife and daughters such as Self-Portrait with His Wife, Margaret (probably

Elizabeth Sheridan
Father: Thomas Sheridan Mother: Elizabeth MacFadden Notes:
Elizabeth is a candidate for the "Miss Sheridan" of County Cavan who married Thomas Smyth in 1750. Rhodes writes that "Elizabeth was a firm believer in the 'Banshi, or female daemon attached to certain ancient Irish families.' She seriously maintained that the Banshi of the Sheridan family was heard wailing beneath the windows of Quilca before the news arrived from France of the death of Frances Sheridan at Blois. Her niece made her very angry by observing that as Mrs. Sheridan was by birth a Chamberlaine, a family of English extraction, she had no right to the guardianship of an Irish fairy, and therefore the Banshi had made a mistake."! A PORTRAIT
(ADDRESSED TO MRS. CREWE, WITH THE COMEDY OF THE SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL.)
by: Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751-1816)

Who rail by precept, and detract by rule,
Lives there no character, so tried, so known,
That even you assist her fame to raise,
Approve by envy, and by silence praise!
Daughters of calumny, I summon you!
You shall decide if this a portrait prove,
Or fond creation of the Muse and Love.
Attend, ye virgin critics, shrewd and sage,
Ye matron censors of this childish age,
Whose peering eye and wrinkled front declare Creating proof, where innuendos fail! Whose practised memories, cruelly exact, The living libel of a slanderous tongue! So shall my theme, as far contrasted be, As saints by fiends or hymns by calumny.
