Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751-1816)
Richard Brinsley Sheridan was born in Dublin in 1751. His grandfather had been an intimate friend of Dean Swift; his father, Thomas Sheridan, was an actor and elocutionist, who wrote a book to prove that oratory and elocution are the most important subjects in the education of a young gentleman; his mother, Frances Sheridan, was the author of a successful comedy and a successful novel. Literature and the theatre lay about Richard from his earliest days, He was sent to school first in Ireland and then, at the age of eleven, to Harrow. At seventeen his formal education came to an end. In 1770 Thomas Sheridan settled in the fashionable health-resort city of Bath, where he opened an academy for oratorical education. It was there that Richard, aged nineteen, met Miss Elizabeth Linley, aged seventeen, an accomplished professional singer and a raving beauty. They were married in April, 1773. How should a penniless young man of twenty-two support his pretty young wife? He proudly refused to let her continue her career as a concert singer. The most obvious way to earn some money was to write a play.

    http://www.shakespearedc.org/rivsheridan.html
    The Rivals, August 26 to October 19, 2003 ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751-1816) may be the only Englishman who had a distinguished career as both a playwright and politician. He was born in Dublin, Ireland. Sheridan's father was an actor and teacher of oratory; his mother wrote sentimental novels and satirical comedies. His grandfather, Thomas Sheridan, was an Irish clergyman and scholar called "the best instructor of youth in these kingdoms" by his friend Jonathan Swift, who wrote Gulliver's Travels in Thomas' home. At age 11, Sheridan was sent away to be schooled at Harrow. His father's debts forced the family to move from Dublin to France. By 1770, Sheridan had rejoined his family in the stylish resort of Bath, teaching at his father's new Academy of Oratory. He eloped with "the toast of Bath," the singer Elizabeth Linley, and fought two duels with her over-aggressive suitors. They settled in London in 1774 where the now properly married couple began to circulate in high society. To earn money Sheridan began writing plays. From the standpoint of his career, 1775 was an incredible year in Sheridan's life. At the beginning of it, he was known only as the young husband of the beautiful Elizabeth; by the end, he was celebrated as the writer of two of the best comedies in the English language.

Born: October 1751, in Dublin, Ireland Died: July 7, 1816, in London, England Sheridan is the playwright credited for resuscitating English drama during the late eighteenth century. He was born into a talented and well educated family. His father, Thomas Sheridan, had an M.A. from Trinity and a reputation second only to David Garrick as an actor. Thomas was manager of the Smock Alley Theater in Dublin, and the author of Lectures on Elocution , published in 1762, which influenced acting and rhetoric during that period. Sheridan's mother, Francis Chamberlaine Sheridan, was a novelist and playwright, most noted for Memoirs of Miss Sidney Biddulph: Extracted from her Own Journal, published in 1761. His grandfather was a Oxford graduate and clergyman who established a school in Dublin which earned the family more than £1000 a year. Sheridan was baptized on November 4, 1751 but his exact birthday is not known. He was privately tutored in Dublin until the family moved to England in 1762. There, Sheridan attended Harrow School with the intent of becoming a lawyer. At school, he was renowned for his pranks and practical jokes but was never caught by his masters, Dr. Sumner and Dr. Parr. He was a good student and poet and upon matriculation he came home to be privately tutored in law when he was eighteen.

        If a Daughter You Have, She's the Plague of Your Life

        Here 's to the maiden of bashful fifteen;
        Here 's to the widow of fifty;
        Here 's to the flaunting, extravagant quean,
        And here 's to the housewife that 's thrifty!
        Let the toast pass;
        Drink to the lass;
        I 'll warrant she 'll prove an excuse for the glass. I ne'er could any lustre see In eyes that would not look on me; I ne'er saw nectar on a lip But where my own did hope to sip. Use the links at the top of the page or go:
