RICHARD BRINSLEY SHERIDAN (1751-1816) This document was originally published in Encyclopedia Britannica, 11th Edition, Volume XXIV . John George Robertson. Cambridge: University Press, 1911. pp. 845-7. Purchase Plays by Richard Brinsley Sheridan After leaving Harrow he kept up a correspondence with a school friend who had gone to Oxford. With this youth, N.B. Halhed, he concocted various literary plans, and between them they actually executed and published (1771) metrical translations of Aristaenetus. In conjunction with Halhed he wrote a farce entitled Jupiter , which was refused by both Garrick and Foote and remained in MS., but is of interest as containing the same device of a rehearsal which was afterwards worked out with such brilliant effect in The Critic . Some of the dialogue is very much in Sheridan's mature manner. Extracts given from papers written in the seven years between his leaving Harrow and the appearance of The Rivals sketches of unfinished plays, poems, political letters and pamphletsshow that he was far from idle. The removal of the family to Bath in 1770-1771 led to an acquaintance with the daughters of the composer Thomas Linley. The eldest daughter, Elizabeth Ann (b. 1754), a girl of sixteen, the

His life, aside from that, boils down to twenty years of fashionable life in London as a dabbler in politics, the companion of dissolute princes and a wastrel. At the age of 21, following a romantic elopement, he married and set up housekeeping in London on a grand scale with no money and no prospects except his wife's dowry. The young couple, nevertheless, entered the fashionable world and apparently held up their end in entertaining. Sheridan's lucky star was in the ascendant, however, for on January 17, 1775, at the Covent Garden Theater, The Rivals was produced. The first performance was not a success. It was too long and the part of Sir Lucius O'Trigger was poorly played. On January 28, a second performance proved a complete success, establishing both play and playwright in the favor of fashionable London. The following year Sheridan, his father-in-law (the composer, Thomas Finley) and Dr. Ford bought a half interest in the Drury Lane theater and in 1778 became sole owners. A SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL A synopsis of the play by Richard Brinsley Sheridan This document was originally published in Minute History of the Drama A SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL was produced at Drury Lane Theater, London, May 8, 1777. THE middle-aged and wealthy bachelor, Sir Peter Teazle, has married the young and comely daughter of a country squire. The fashionable society of which Lady Teazle through through her marriage becomes a part, occupies itself mainly with malicious gossip whose arrows no one, however chaste, can completely escape. By far the most dangerous of these backbiting cliques is the one led by Lady Sneerwell. This lady is attempting through lies and letters written by the forger, Snake, to break up the love affair between Charles Surface and Sir Peter's ward, Maria, hoping to get Charles for herself. To this end she has joined forces with Charles' brother, Joseph, a hypocritical youth who enjoys an excellent reputation in contrast to his brother's wild and extravagant habits. Joseph has his eye on the fortune that will one day come to Maria and is backed in his suit by Sir Peter who has been utterly fooled by the young man's righteous exterior. Maria sees through Joseph, however, and turns a cold ear in spite of her guardian's expressed wishes. Meanwhile Sir Oliver Surface arrives unexpectedly from Australia. He hears such conflicting reports of his nephews and prospective heirs that he decides to look them over before he makes his arrival known. He approaches Charles in the guise of a money lender and in the famous "auction" scene buys the family portraits. Throughout the transaction he is impressed with Charles' high sense of honor and obligation to those less fortunate. When he approaches Joseph as a poor relation begging help, Joseph is revealed in his true colors.

A traitor's kiss :the life of Richard Brinsley Sheridan, 1751-1816 by Fintan O'Toole Book News Annotation: The life of 18th century British playwright-actor-politician- revolutionary supporter of Irish independence (or traitor?) Sheridan was as least as dramatic as any of his plays (e.g. The School for Scandal), as Dublin journalist and drama critic O'Toole ably conveys in this biography from a decidedly Irish perspective. First published in 1997 by Granta Books, UK. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews@booknews.com) Review from Publishers Weekly, 09/07/1998:

Sheridan was just twenty-three years old, this was his first play, and his Mrs. Malaprop may have borrowed from Henry Fielding's Mrs. Slipslop, but the stage and the language got one of its most enjoyable and enduring creations not to mention "a nice derangement of epitaphs." Drury Lane, Sheridan Go Out On this day in 1809 London's Drury Lane Theatre burned down; when those watching the spectacle from a nearby pub with theater owner-parliamentarian Richard Brinsley Sheridan remarked on his composure, he famously responded, "A man may surely take a glass of wine by his own fireside." One-liners aside, Sheridan was most famous in his later years for a five-hour parliamentary speech which brought both sides of the House down. Richard Sheridan's School for Scandal In The School for Scandal Sheridan aimed to lampoon the general hypocrisy of the time, and portray his Joseph Surface and Lady Sneerwell as types. That a contemporary politician saw himself specifically targeted, and demanded that the play be cancelled, is another way of saying that Sheridan's masterpiece has been popular for well over two centuries, and will likely remain so.
