Major General Philip Sheridan PHILIP HENRY SHERIDAN (1831 - 1888) general Born 6 th Mar 1831, Killinkere, County Cavan Taken to America at an early age; educated at West Point Military Academy 1848–53. He showed administrative talent, and then distinguished himself as a cavalry commander in 1862. Later, in the Civil War he rose to be major-general in command of cavalry corps, Army of the Potomac, 1864. After successful engagements against Lee’s forces he was appointed commander in Shenandoah Valley and conducted a brilliant and decisive campaign. He won the last great battle of the war at Five Forks on 1 April 1865. When hostilities ended he was appointed military governor of Texas and Louisiana and then saw active service in 'Indian campaigns' in the west. A leader of great natural magnetism and a strict disciplinarian, he was responsible for many atrocities; the notorious maxim 'The only good Indian is a dead Indian' was first used by him. Succeeded Sherman as commander-in-chief in 1883. Published Personal Memoirs (1888). Died at Nonquitt, Massachusetts, 5 August 1888.
