Major General Philip Sheridan
PHILIP HENRY SHERIDAN

(1831 - 1888) general
Born 6 th Mar 1831, Killinkere, County Cavan Taken to America at an early age; educated at West Point Military Academy 1848–53. He showed administrative talent, and then distinguished himself as a cavalry commander in 1862. Later, in the Civil War he rose to be major-general in command of cavalry corps, Army of the Potomac, 1864. After successful engagements against Lee’s forces he was appointed commander in Shenandoah Valley and conducted a brilliant and decisive campaign. He won the last great battle of the war at Five Forks on 1 April 1865. When hostilities ended he was appointed military governor of Texas and Louisiana and then saw active service in 'Indian campaigns' in the west. A leader of great natural magnetism and a strict disciplinarian, he was responsible for many atrocities; the notorious maxim 'The only good Indian is a dead Indian' was first used by him. Succeeded Sherman as commander-in-chief in 1883. Published Personal Memoirs (1888). Died at Nonquitt, Massachusetts, 5 August 1888.

Lin Ze Xu was born in China in 1785. On December 31, 1838 he was appointed by the Emperor as Imperial Commissioner with the mission to eradicate opium in China. The sale of opium by the East India Company had jumped from 40,000 pounds in 1729 to three and one-half million pounds in 1832. In this position he proceeded to confiscate 2,600,000 pounds of opium and supervised its destruction during a 23-day campaign beginning on June 3, 1839 in Humen, China. This action served to ignite the Opium Wars with Britain. Three years later, China had lost the war and Lin Ze Xu lost his title. However, through his efforts he became a symbol of moral resistance to the invasion of drugs wherever their source.

For the Plains Indians this was the last act of defiance ending in a massacre carried out by Colonel James Forsyth's Seventh Cavalry. There would be no more battles but this 100+ years old memory is still a wound in many hearts. Perhaps the most famous Indian-fighting general in the U.S. Army at the time, General Nelson A. Miles , accused Forsyth of "blind stupidity or criminal indifference" and relieved him of command. General Miles called this "a useless slaughter of Indian women and children". But the war department, determined to portray this final confrontation of the Indian wars in a heroic light, stopped any further investigation of the incident.
