A Service of Recognition and Remembrance for Anna Howard Shaw

ANNA HOWARD SHAW The Center is named for Anna Howard Shaw, who was born in England on February 14, 1847. The Shaw family immigrated to Michigan where Anna, at age fourteen, felt the call to preach and became one of the first women granted a license to preach by the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1878, Shaw became the second woman to graduate from Boston University School of Theology, but she was refused ordination by the New England Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. She was one of the first women to be ordained in any branch of Methodism by the New York Conference of the Methodist Protestant Church in 1880. While serving Wesleyan Methodist Church in East Dennis, Massachusetts, Shaw earned a medical degree from Boston University. At age thirty-nine, she broadened her activity from pastoral and healing ministries to also become the "master orator" for social justice concerns, organizing and lecturing throughout the world for the causes of temperance, women’s suffrage, and peace. Shaw was the first ordained woman to preach in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, and London, and the first woman to deliver a sermon in the State Church of Sweden. The first woman awarded a Distinguished Service Medal for her work as chair of the Women’s Committee of the National Council of Defense during World War I, Shaw was an advocate for the League of Nations covenant just prior to her death in 1919.

    In Honor of Great Women
    by Jo Freeman
The contributions of nineteen women to American life over four centuries were highlighted on October 7 when they were inducted into the Women's Hall of Fame. Among them were Attorney General Janet Reno (1938- ), suffragist and preacher Anna Howard Shaw(1847-1919), civil war surgeon Mary Edwards Walker (1832-1919), and two retired Air Force generals Jeanne Holm (1921- ) and Wilma Vaught (1930- ). They bring to 176 the number of American women so honored "whose contributions to the arts, athletics, business, education, government, the humanities, philanthropy and science, have been the greatest value of the development of their country." The Hall of Fame was created in 1969 by the citizens of Seneca Falls, New York, home of the 1848 women's rights convention which wrote the Declaration of Sentiments, and of the 1923 National Woman's Party conference where the Equal Rights Amendment was introduced. For many years the New York Chiropractic College housed the Hall. After purchasing a former bank building in 1979 it moved to Fall street in downtown Seneca Falls. Inside are photographs of the women it honors and other exhibits on the achievements of American women.

    RHETORIC OF AMERICAN WOMEN
    SCOPE OF THE COURSE.
Although contemporary public address courses now include women and their speeches, it seems to me that they are still seen too often through the wrong lens. This course is designed to focus exclusively on the rhetoric of American women, because I believe there is much to be learned by that approachboth by you and by me. Students completing the course should gain an understanding of: (1) the historical conditions and constraints that have limited the role of women in the public sphere; (2) the public issues that women have engaged and influenced in the United States; (3) the rhetorical strategies employed and the rhetorical choices made by American women; and (4) a broader perspective on the changes in women's public discourse over time. REQUIRED READING. The text for the course is Karlyn Kohrs Campbell, Man Cannot Speak for Her (New York: Greenwood Press, 1989). In addition, there will be assigned readings on reserve. I think you will also find these excellent websites helpful:
