Anna Howard Shaw (1847-1919)
Anna Howard Shaw was born in England on February 14, 1847. When she was four years old the Shaw family moved from England to America, where they lived in Massachusetts. In 1859 they settled in the wilderness of Green Township, Mecosta County, near Big Rapids, Michigan. They lived on an isolated, rundown farm that required much work before it would become productive. After living there only a short time, her father left her mother and the children alone on the farm and returned to Massachusetts to work. 12-year-old Anna cared for the farm by clearing the land, planting crops, and finishing off the cabin along with caring for the family. In 1892, when Susan B. Anthony became president of the newly formed National American Woman Suffrage Association, Anna became vice president. In 1904, Anna became the president of the NAWSA. Throughout this time frame she was a well-known figure in demonstrations, conferences, congressional hearings, and lecture circuits. Unlike many suffragists who were accused of being "manly", Anna Shaw has made an effort to construct and maintain a traditional feminine look and persona. She believed that "no woman in public life can afford to make herself conspicious by an eccentricity of dress and appearance. If she does so she suffers for it herself, which may not disturb her, and to a greater degree, for the cause she represents, which should disturb her." But while Shaw crafted her appearance to conform to her concervative audience's standard of decorum, it was a superficial concession. She was a forceful and dynamic public speaker at a time when virtuous women were supposed to be demure and silent. She was powerfully assertive when passivity was the norm for women.

Suffragist Anna Howard Shaw, 1847-1919, lived in Mecosta County, Michigan, during her formative years. Her lifetime accomplishments in the fields of women's rights, medicine, religion, and oratory resulted in worldwide fame. She was honored, during her lifetime and after, by governments, royalty, religious leaders, and people from every walk of life the world over. Anna Howard Shaw came to live in the wilderness of Green Township, Mecosta County, with her English immigrant parents in 1859 at the age of twelve. While growing up in Michigan, she attended Big Rapids High School and went on to study at Albion College. Later, at Boston University, she earned a theology degree in 1878 and a medical degree in 1885, all the while honing her talents in oratory, a lifelong passion. As a minister, physician, and eminent orator, she labored tirelessly for the great causes dear to her heart. During her lifetime of 72 years, she gave more than 10,000 lectures worldwide. She was awarded a Distinguished Service Medal by the United States Congress for her humanitarian work during World War I. But her most enduring legacy resulted from her dynamic leadership and energetic efforts in the women's suffrage movement. After the death of Susan B. Anthony, the movement's leader and her close friend, Anna Howard Shaw carried on the work that culminated in passage of the 19 th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. During that struggle she wrote, "Nothing bigger can come to a human being than to love a great cause more than life itself." Her autobiography

Minister and suffragist Anna Howard Shaw was born February 14, 1847 at Newcastle upon Tyne, England. When she was four, the family moved to Massachusetts, then in 1859 her father settled his wife and younger children in an unfinished cabin on Michigan’s frontier while he returned east. Shaw’s bitter recollections of the responsibilities that fell to her in the next decade make up the most powerful section of the memoirs she published as Story of a Pioneer Vowing to avoid dependency, she prepared herself for the ministry.

Dr. Anna Howard Shaw (1847-1919). When Shaw was twelve her father moved the family to a frontier "farm." He then left her invalid mother, one older brother and a batch of younger brothers and sisters while he returned to Massachusetts to work. Never mind that the farmhouse was a cabin with only holes for doors and windows, the fields were full of tree stumps and the oldest son had to leave for health reasons. Shaw loved the adventure. With only two years of education she became a teacher at age fifteen. Eventually she went on to high school, Albion College, and both the divinity and medical schools of Boston University. Although an ordained minister, and a medical doctor she spent most of her life as a lecturer for suffrage, temperance and the League of Nations plan. In 1904 Shaw became the president of the National American Women's Suffrage Association (NAWSA) which eventually won the vote under Carrie Chapman Catt in 1920.

HISTORICAL FIRSTS FOR WOMEN CLERGY Part 2 Anna Howard Shaw (1847-1919) The First Woman Ordained in The Methodist Protestant Church - 1880
Anna Howard Shaw was born in Newcastle-on-Tyne, England on February 14, 1847. She was a descendant of English Unitarians. Anna's parents came to America when she was four years old, and after living for several years in Massachusetts they moved to the then unsettled port of Michigan, where Anna encountered the hardships of pioneer life. During her pastorate in East Dennis she applied to the New England Methodist Episcopal Conference for ordination, but although she performed better on her examination than any candidate that year, her ordination was refused on account of her sex. The case was appealed to the general conference in Cincinnati in 1880, where the refusal was confirmed. Ms. Shaw then applied for ordination to the Methodist Protestant Church and received it on 12th October, 1880, becoming the first woman to be ordained in that denomination. She supplemented her theological course with one in medicine, taking the degree of M. D. at Boston University during her pastorate. Becoming more and more interested in practical reform, she finally resigned her position in East Dennis and became a lecturer for the Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Association. After entering the general lecture field and becoming widely and favorably known as an eloquent speaker on reform topics, she was appointed national superintendent of franchise in the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. She preached the opening sermon at the Women's International Council in Washington in 1888. Soon after, at the urgent request of leading suffragists, she resigned her office in the National Woman's Christian Temperance Union and accepted that of National Lecturer for the National American Woman Suffrage Association, of which she was elected vice-president-at-large in 1892. She was also president of Wimodaughsis, a woman's national club, of Washington, D. C.

Starting with Anna Howard Shaw (1847-1919) who was first woman ordained in the Methodist Protestant Church, in the 1880s women began to win the right to ordination in mainline Methodism. Shaw, Anna Howard
Anna Howard Shaw Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.; neg. no. LC USZ 62 20177 (1847-1919), clergyman, physician, and suffragist Born in Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, on February 14, 1847, Anna Shaw was brought to the United States in 1851. She grew up from 1859 on an isolated frontier farm near Big Rapids, Michigan. Her father's absence, her mother's nervous breakdown, and her elder brother's illness forced 12-year-old Anna to undertake the tasks of clearing the land, planting crops, finishing the poor cabin, and caring for the family. She received a year or two of schooling, which she supplemented with reading on her own, and at age 15 she became a teacher in a frontier schoolhouse. At the end of the Civil War she moved to the home of a married sister in Big Rapids and enrolled in the local high school. Shaw became active in the Methodist church, preached her first sermon in 1870, and was licensed to preach in 1871. In 1873 she entered Albion (Michigan) College, where she worked her way through two years of studies, and in 1878 she graduated from the divinity school of Boston University, the only woman in her class. She then took charge of a church in East Dennis, Massachusetts, but her application for ordination (her license did not permit her to administer sacraments) was refused because of her sex first by the New England Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church and then by the General Conference, which took the further step of revoking her license. Finally, in 1880, she was ordained as the first woman minister of the Methodist Protestant Church. While ministering to her East Dennis congregation and also to a nearby Congregational meeting, she undertook medical studies at Boston University, earning her M.D. in 1886.
