Uniformed Youth Group Biography: Ernest Thompson Seaton (Canadian/American, 1860-1946)
Figure 1.This photograph was taken at Standing Rock Village, showing Seaton applying war paint to a group of braves about 1903. Ernest Thompson Seaton, or "Black Wolf," was an award winning wildlife illustrator and naturalist who was also a spell-binding storyteller and lecturer, a best selling author of animal stories, expert with Native American Sign language and early supporter of the political, cultural and spiritual rights of First Peoples. He played a major role in the development of the American Boy Scout movement, writing the first American handbook and serving as Chief Scout. He promoted the naturalist and native American approach to Scouting, but lost out to thoise who want a more militarist approach. He devoted much of his energy to the Woodcraft movement in America.
Family
Both sides of Seaton's Scottish family fought for The Old and New "Pretenders" and therefore had to leave Scotland after the 1715 and rising of the clans). Ernest's father Joseph Seaton was a ship-owner, but lost his fortune. He also did not make a good farmer, so by 1870 they had moved to Toronto where he was employed as an accountant. Earnest was the eighth of ten brothers that lived. (One sister died at age 6) The family, with the exception of a couple of the older brothers, went to Canada (Lindsay, Ontario) in 1866, when his father had lost his fortune.

Foundation
The Ladies Home Journal magazine asked him to write a series on woodcraft for boys. On the first day of July in 1902, he founded the Woodcraft Indians. Seton invited boys to camp at his estate in Connecticut and published a series of articles in "Ladies' Home Journal" on woodcraft and Indian-style camping. The first article appeared in May, 1902. The Woodcraft Indians proved to be the most influential of the variuous precursor groups to Boy Scouting in America. [Macleod, p. 130.] The Woodcraft program in many ways the program contrasted sharply with Scouting. Basically the only thongs the two had in common were healtful camping and evening campfires. The outlook of Woodcraft ans Scouting were almost diametrially oppossed.
Setup
The Woodcraft Indians were a loosely-structured boys' program. Seaton wrote a book, The Birchbark Rolls of the Woodcraft Indians as a guide for the program. Seaton's respect for Native American traditions and life style played an important part in the program. The program was designed for boys aged 12 to 15 years and was based on North American Indian lore and outdoor life. The boys wre organized into tribes. Seaton in 1906 added the Little Lodge of Woodcraft Indians for younger boys and girls, which in many ways was the fore runner of Cubbing, even though it took the Boy Scouts many years to establish Cubbingwell after most other countries had established the program.

Boy Scouts and Indians
The Boy Scouts of America is an offshoot of the British Boy Scout Association, founded in 1908 by Lord Robert S. S. Baden-Powell (1857-1941), First Baron of Gilwell, and British general. Known as "the Hero of Mafeking," Baden-Powell became famous for his participation in the Boer War, where he first witnessed African military scouts engaged in outdoor skills. Upon returning to England, he founded Scouting, soon to become the largest international youth organization. At the turn of the twentieth century a number of youth organizations also flourished in the United States, all of which employed "Indian lore" as the focal point of their programs. Of particular importance were the Sons of Daniel Boone, founded in 1900 by Daniel Beard (1850-1941) of Cincinnati, an artist, outdoorsman, author of children's books, and close friend of Mark Twain. Equally significant was the Woodcraft League of America, established in 1902 by Ernest Thompson Seton (1860-1946), a Canadian naturalist, author, and illustrator. Seton (who had changed his name from Ernest Seton Thompson in 1901) was married twice, his second wife being Julia M. Buttree, who wrote The Rhythm of the Red Man (1930), one of the earliest books on American Indian music and dance to be adopted by the Scouts.

    ernest thompson seton and woodcraft
Known as a writer of animal stories, and the Chief Scout of the Boys Scouts of America, Ernest Thompson Seton was a champion of the spirit of woodcraft.
Ernest Thompson Seton (1860-1946) grew up in Toronto (although he was born in South Shields, County Durham, England). He was the son of a ship builder who, having lost a significant amount of money left for Canada to try farming. Unsuccessful at that too, his father gained employment as an accountant. Macleod (1983: 6) records that much of Ernest Thompson Seton 's imaginative life between the ages of ten and fifteen was centred in the wooded ravines at the edge of town, 'where he built a little cabin and spent long hours in nature study and Indian fantasy'. His father was overbearing and emotionally distant - and he tried to guide Seton away from his love of nature into more conventional career paths. Seton went through puberty late, and 'suffered the social handicaps that slow development entails. [He] fled outdoors for solace' ( ibid He displayed a considerable talent for painting and illustration and gained a scholarship for the Royal Academy of Art in London. However, he was unable to complete the scholarship (in part through bad health). His daughter records that his first visit to the United States was in December 1883. Ernest Thompson Seton went to New York where met with many naturalists, ornithologists and writers. From then until the late 1880's he split his time between Carberry, Toronto and New York - becoming an established wildlife artist (Seton-Barber undated). In 1902 he wrote the first of a series of articles that began the Woodcraft movement (published in the Ladies Home Journal). He had invited a group of boys to camp at his estate in Connecticut in the same year and had experimented with woodcraft and Indian-style camping. However, he began developing his ideas around woodcraft from the 1880os on.
