Special: 2 tickets and room for $99 Come and celebrate the bard's 130th birthday in the town where he wrote some of his best-known poems. For more information, contact Doug Bell There wasn't a fus when this fellow came to town. There sure was when he left. He loved life, language, words, and space. In Whitehorse 1904, he became known as "the solitary walker." Nothing pleased him more than losing himself in the "great wild silence" which he was to describe as "the final word in desolation" with an "end-of-the-world feeling." One of his biographers said "all his life, Robert Service was afflicted by a restlessness and a wanderlust that was to take him to the ends of the earth." He stepped on Canadian soil in April 1896 prophetically perhaps, in the year gold was found in the Klondike. He had $15 in his pocket and visions of becoming a cowboy. He roamed the land at will for eight years, ending up broke in Vancouver. His earlier banking experience saved him... the Bank of Commerce in Victoria hired him. Within a year they transferred him. He loved Whitehorse in 1904. He often entertained at church and other social events, reciting classic poetry. A friend encouraged him to write his own. He loved the idea.

When he was twenty-one, Service quit his bank job in Glasgow and emigrated to Canada; his three winters in White Horse were the "incubation of all worth while in my life" daily snowshoes into "the Great White Silence" breathing "below-zero air as bracing as champagne" and composing millionaire-making poems. It's easy to fight when everything's right
And you're mad with the thrill and the glory;
It's easy to cheer when victory's near,
And wallow in fields that are gory.
It's a different song when everything's wrong, When you're feeling infernally mortal; When it's ten against one, and hope there is none, Buck up, little soldier, and chortle! Carry On War This is the law of the Yukon, that only the Strong shall survive; That surely the Weak shall perish, and only the Fit survive. Dissolute, damned and despairful, crippled and palsied and slain, This is the Will of the Yukon,Lo, how she makes it plain! My friends

The Men, that Don’t Fit In

Fi-Fi, in Bed Up into the sky I stare;
All the little stars I see;
And I know that God is there O, how lonely He must be! Me, I laugh and leap all day, Till my head begins to nod; He's so great, He cannot play: I am glad I am not God. Poor kind God upon His throne, Up there in the sky so blue, Always, always all alone . . . "~Please, dear God, I pity You.~" Gods in the Gutter My friends
The man above was a murderer, the man below was a thief; And I lay there in the bunk between, ailing beyond belief; A weary armful of skin and bone, wasted with pain and grief. My feet were froze, and the lifeless toes were purple and green and gray; The little flesh that clung to my bones, you could punch it in holes like clay; The skin on my gums was a sullen black, and slowly peeling away.

The Telegraph Operator
I will not wash my face; I will not brush my hair; I "pig" around the place There's nobody to care. Nothing but rock and tree; Nothing but wood and stone; Oh God, it's hell to be Alone, alone, alone.
Snow-peaks and deep-gashed draws Corral me in a ring. I feel as if I was The only living thing On all this blighted earth; And so I frowst and shrink, And crouching by my hearth, I hear the thoughts I think.
I think of all I miss The boys I used to know; The girls I used to kiss; The coin I used to blow: The bars I used to haunt; The racket and the row; The beers I didn't want (I wish I had 'em now).
Day after day the same, Only a little worse; No one to grouch or blame Oh, for a loving curse! Oh, in the night I fear, Haunted by nameless things, Just for a voice to cheer, Just for a hand that clings!
Faintly as from a star Voices come o'er the line; Voices of ghosts afar

Biographies of the featured poets Li Po (Japanese Rihaku) (701-762) Chinese poet, one of the greatest figures of Chinese literature. Li Po (or Li Bai) was born into the minor nobility in what is now Sichuan (Szechwan) Province. After an apprenticeship with a Daoist hermit and a time of wandering, he lived briefly as a poet at the Tang dynasty court in Changan but left as the result of intrigue. Then he returned to a life of Daoist study and carefree reflective wandering, writing poems and enjoying nature and the pleasures of wine, supplied free by the emperor's orders. According to legend, Li Po was drowned while drunkenly leaning from a boat to embrace the Moon's reflection on the water. Poem: "Lament of the Frontier Guard" John Donne (1572 -1631) A noted english poet and essayist, Donne sailed with the Earl of Essex and Sir Walter Raleigh in the naval expeditions against Cadiz in August 1596, where the inspiration for his poem "The Burnt Ship" occurred. Walt Whitman (1819-1892) During the Civil War Whitman ministered to wounded soldiers in Union army hospitals in Washington, D.C. He remained there, working as a government clerk, until 1873, when he suffered a stroke that left him partially paralysed. Poem: "Come up from the fields, Father"

Robert William Service
Robert William Service , a Canadian poet and novelist, was born at Preston, England. In 1894 he moved to Canada and settled on Vancouver Island. There he took employment with the Canadian Bank of Commerce in Victoria, B.C., and was transferred to White Horse in the Yukon and then to Dawson. In all he spent eight years in the Yukon and travelled widely. During his last years with the bank he wrote verse describing life in the North.
THE CREMATION OF SAM MCGEE
There are strange things done in the midnight sun
By the men who moil for gold
The Arctic trails have their secret tales
That make your blood run cold;
The Northern Lights have seen strange sights,
But the queerest they ever did see
Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge I cremated Sam McGee. Now Sam McGee was from Tennessee, where the cotton blooms and blows. Why he left his home in the south to roam round the Pole God only knows. He was always cold, but the land of gold seemed to hold him like a spell; Through he'd often say in his homely way that he'd "sooner live in hell."

"Our nearest town is about 38 miles from here and we miss so many things that may make life better and brighter.The average farm house is a prison and women prisoners. Made such by the conditions over which they have no control. I wish that every woman on a farm could get away to someplace where she could see new sights and hear new sounds and think new thoughts. It would be the making of her. Monotony and loneliness, more than work, are on the mind." Myrtle Ward:
"They had to really really become ingenious people. They had to manage on so little. Their husbands, no matter were good providers, but some weren't and many of these women suffered the lack of supplies and so on. But I think the worst of all was to be cut off from other women for months and years at a time. The men had a chance to go to town and pick up supplies and then hob nob with the men of the area, get caught up on politics and so on. But most of the women were bringing up children. They couldn't leave. They were definitely isolated. It was really cruel." Neva Myrick:
"Did I ever work? That's a question that I don't suppose I thought of it at the time. But my duties were homemaking, gardening, feeding multitudes of men cause we had to have them in the fall, early fall and through harvest time. I also helped with feeding the cattle and doing the numerous things that farm women were supposed to do."
