MIA: Subject: Women
This subject section has been created to provide broad documentation both on women's issues and Marxism, and also a space for women's writings that are significant, but transcriptions not currently volumous or organized enough to warrant their own section. Some of these writers are not Marxists, but are included for context or reference. The intention is to also include the cultural as well as political milieu in which revolutionary women have worked during their struggles. As with the rest of MIA, most heavily represented are classic texts. The few references to contemporary Marxism-Feminism are meant to be a gateway to further exploration for interested readers. Transcribed texts or title suggestions welcome to the co-Directors, Sally Ryan and Adina Storm

Sir Hugh Allan, a shipping magnate, contributed heavily to the Canadian Conservative Party and was subsequently awarded the contract to build the Canadian Pacific Railway. Telegrams from the pm Sir John MacDonald (1815-91) to Sir Hugh including one saying "send another ten thousand" deepened the case for corruption and Sir John's govt was forced to resign in Nov 1873. The contract with Sir Hugh was cancelled, and the Conservatives were decisively defeated in the election of January 1874. Once MacDonald was reported to have observed, " There is no gratitude to be expected from the public. I have found that out years ago. Teapot Dome
Teapot Dome, Wyoming, was a federally-owned oil reserve set aside in 1915 to supply the US navy with emergency fuel. President Warren Harding in 1921 ordered the reserved be placed under the jurisdiction of the Department of the Interior. In 1922 the secretary of the Interior, Albert Fall, arranged for the lease of the fields to private developers without competitive bidding in exchange for the building of naval oil-storage depots. In 1924 a congressional investigative committee found that the developers had made large profits, and Fall was convicted of receiving a bribe, was fired and sentenced to one year in prison. Teapot Dome subsequently became a symbol of scandal in the 1920s.

    58. - Liz Stanley, Mourning Becomes…: The Spaces Between Lives Lived And Lives Writ
concerns the birth on 30 April and death on the early morning of 1 May 1895 of the daughter of the feminist writer and theorist Olive Schreiner (18551920).

Mourning becomes…: the spaces between lives lived and lives written Liz Stanley Sociology/Women’s Studies University of Manchester Manchester M13 9PL, UK liz.stanley@man.ac.uk ABSTRACT A short introduction about who sees what This photograph has two captions, either ‘an aspect of the work of mourning’, or ‘concerning a metaphor for feminist auto/biography’. I start by asking some questions about who and what lies within its literal and figurative frame. The work of mourning, inside the law Taking off from Gillian Rose’s ideas about mourning and my appreciative disagreement with them, I ‘follow the name’ of someone who died, a baby who died soon after her birth and who was actually not named. I do this in part as a means of thinking about how and in what ways and with what kinds of consequences ‘lives’ are written, and the complex and ultimately unknowable relation written lives have to ‘lives lived’. But I also do so in larger part to honour the dead, to honour this particular unnamed dead person, and through her many others as well. I shall ‘tell the tale’, as it were, of this particular life and death and its resonance for those who were involved and those who think about this now. Without the law - ‘The baby didn’t cry. The feminist picked it up.’
