THE OPEN WINDOW by Hector Hugh Munro "Saki" Saki was the pen-name of Hector Hugh Munro (1870-1916) a British political journalist who worked in Russia and France. He published several volumes of short stories which show an understanding of children and of young people who play cleverly and sometimes maliciously on the feelings of their elders.
For Graham Greene, Munro was the best English humourist of the twentieth century. Munro's mother died when he was born, so he was sent to England to be brought up by two maiden old aunts who turned his life into a real misery. Greene states that this unhappy childhood is the key to the cruelty in almost all his short stories. This is the case of THE OPEN WINDOW... The Open Window La Ventana Abierta
'My aunt will be down presently, Mr. Nuttel,' said a very self-possessed young lady of fifteen; 'in the meantime you must try and put up with me.'
Framton Nuttel tried to say a few words which should flatter both the niece of the moment and the aunt that was to come. Privately he doubted more than ever whether these formal visits on a number of total strangers would do much towards helping the nerve cure which he was to undergo.

Saki
Biographical notes by Blake Wilfong "A little inaccuracy sometimes saves tons of explanation." Saki was the pseudonym of writer Hector Hugh Munro (1870-1916). Born in Burma, but raised and educated in England, he began his writing career because poor health precluded more strenuous occupations. He borrowed the nom de plume "Saki" from a character in The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam Though he was primarily a journalist, Saki is remembered today for his fiction. Most of his tales were acerbic satires on the stuffy English upper class, but several contained elements of the fantastic: werewolves, ghosts, witches, etc. The novel When William Came (1913) is borderline SF because it correctly predicted World War I and English reactions to it. Of his more than 100 short stories, two qualify as genuine science fiction. Despite his age, cynicism, and marginal health, Saki enlisted in the British army during World War I. Though offered commissions, he refused, believing he should learn to be a soldier before commanding them. He was killed by a sniper's bullet during the Battle of the Somme. (If you know where I can obtain a public domain or royalty free image of Saki, please let me know. Thanks!)

December 18 ~  A Little Inaccuracy Best of Saki: H.H. Munro
"A l i t t l e inaccuracy s o m e t i m e s saves t o n s of explanations." ~ Saki, The Square Egg Master of the short story, Hector Hugh Munro (1870-1916), was born on this day in Akyab, Burma (now Myamar). The youngest of three, he was raised in England by two maiden aunts. A frail and only child, he later characterized his upbringing in Sredni Vashtar , "Without his imagination, which was rampant under the spur of loneliness, he would have succumbed long ago." He took his pen name, Saki from the character who served wine to the gods in the poem Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam "I always say beauty is only sin deep," he once said. The mild-mannered Englishman became a popular journalist and political satirist for the Morning Post Westminster Gazette , and others before concentrating on writing short stories. Often compared to O. Henry , Saki created stories with razor-sharp wit. His memorable surprise endings could be funny, super-natural, or frightening. "In baiting a mouse trap with cheese," he said, "always leave room for the mouse." His first novel
