Scaramouche Soundtrack CD Released by Special Arrangement with Turner Classic Movies Music
The novels of Rafael Sabatini (1875-1950) gave birth to the greatest swashbuckling soundtracks in the history of Hollywood, among them Captain Blood (1935, Erich Wolfgang Korngold), The Sea Hawk (1940, also Korngold) and The Black Swan (1942, Alfred Newman). The scores are filled with the heroic fanfares, buoyant love themes and glorious orchestrations that formed the very foundation of the symphonic film score, a tradition that continues to this day in the works of John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Danny Elfman and others.
The last major Hollywood adaptation of Sabatini's work was M-G-M's Scaramouche in 1952, directed by George Sidney (The Three Musketeers) and starring Stewart Granger, Janet Leigh, Eleanor Parker and Mel Ferrer. Set in 18th century Revolutionary France, the film features aristocratic intrigue, sharp-witted dialogue, thrilling heroism and exciting swordfights, culminating in an eight-and-a-half minute duel that set the record for the longest in film history.
The score to Scaramouche was composed by Victor Young (1900-1956), a legendary composer of Hollywood's Golden Age who worked primarily and Paramount and only occasionally ventured to M-G-M. Young was beloved for his gorgeous melodies and he provided not one but two full-fledged love themes for Scaramouche, one for each leading lady; he also composed a playful theme for the actor persona of Scaramouche, which the hero adopts, and a noble theme for the ideals of the French underground. The balance of the score consists of galloping action, moody suspense, heroic fanfares, and charming, Renaissance-styled theater music.

From Books to Film In 1904, J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan was performed on stage in London. It has enchanted children ever since. It is part fairy tale and part adventure story, presenting its pirates as foolish and incompetent caricatures. In children's literature of the 1800's and early 1900's, pirates were popular subject matter. A new breed of hero was created: the smart, young, Anglo- Saxon Protestant who does battle with pirates. From this came the swashbuckling heroes of the silver screen.

These were the first 'swashbucklers,' featuring sea fights and gentlemen pirates. In the 1930's and 40's, there were many swashbucklers adorning the silver screen. The remake of

"A hundred years from now when they publish a collection of the cartoon masters of the 20th Century, Will Eisner will undoubtedly rank high on the list." - Harvey Kurtzman ( Help Magazine , Feb. 1962 INTRODUCTION
What more can be said? More than forty years have passed since Harvey Kurtzman wrote his remarkably prescient homage to a comic strip creator who had retired his strip a decade earlier and had long since moved on to other endeavors. Since this first retrospective by Kurtzman, Will Eisner has been repeatedly discussed, interviewed, scrutinized and celebrated. Indeed, his legendary accomplishments and resulting stature invite Olympian comparisons: He is a Titan, who both preceded and out-lived most of the first-generation comic book creators; the modern Prometheus who refined, defined and gifted humanity with the concepts of sequential art; a Zeus-like presence from whose mighty brow the groundbreaking strip, The Spirit , sprang fully realized like Athena.

Pirates of the Caribbean Home Page An Annotated Bibliography Of Pyracy Back to the main Pirates Page This is far from a complete bibliography of Piracy and is not intended to be one. Instead it is a list of books that I have found useful and used to prepare this site. The first part is annotated, that is I have made comments about the books. At the bottom you will find a more inclusive list of books, I found useful while putting this page together. This bibliography is divded into works considered Historical in nature and works of Fiction Works considered Historical in nature are considered fact, but do not be fooled into believing they are 100% true. Most of what is told about pirates has been distorted through the imagination of generations of story tellers, known as Historians (I know, I'm one of them!). On occasion, some historians distort information in order to present a certain view. What we have is a written history of the lore of piracy. While most Historians make every effort to be as accurate as possible, they must rely on primary and secondary sources that are, at times suspect. At this point they may be led to specualte on what is probable and what is just the fancy of an overactive imagination. History, even when it is 400-600 years old continuosly gets revised and reviewed. Works considered to be fiction were knowingly written as fiction and are sold as fiction. Amazingly enough you may find quite a bit of factual information floating around in these books of fiction. This is because the best fiction is written by people who have good background on the history of the subject and draw from these facts to tell a story. For instance, Robert Louis Stevenson drew heavily on Defoe/Johnson and his own ocean going voyages to add realism to his book.

      Henry Green (Henry Yorke): Nothing

The British writer Henry Green's literary skill went far beyond a comedy of manners, which this book appears to be on the surface. Dense with meaning, "Nothing" is a short literary gem, which forces the reader to read a million nuances into the witty and yet deeply dense conversations which make up the entirety of the book. Arnold Bennett: The Old Wives' Tale

Published in 1908. This study of the changes wrought by time on the lives of two English sisters during the 19th century is a masterpiece of literary realism. Constance and Sophia Baines, the daughters of a shopkeeper, grow up in the rural town of Bursley. Sophia eventually runs off and settles in Paris with her husband, who is a cad, and Constance remains behind in England and marries the mild-mannered shop assistant. The sisters are reunited years later when they are old, and Bennett skillfully contrasts what has remained stable in their characters with the differences time and environment have produced in their personalities. This long and ambitious work established Bennett's reputation as a novelist. (*****)
